Hi! Just for the record, I removed a fairing panel, vert.fin to horizontal stab on the left side only. I had this enormous flashlight and had a good look-around in there. My Rebel is s/n 083, 85 hours on conventional gear, steerable tailwheel and has had some hard landings as previous messages have indicated. I am happy to report that there was no sign of distress anywhere around the FUS 31. All is still as solid as can be. I checked those three rivets at the back lip and yes they probably could be a little beefier, but as you come forward, since I installed that tailwheel reinforcement (the one that looks like an engine mount bolt bracket), I have rivets from FUS31 into that piece also and they look plenty beefy. That is only a short distance from that aft lip and really supports that FUS 31 pretty well. Could the following scenario be possible? A party completes his Rebel and within a few hours takes off the tailwheel and goes onto floats and finds no need to install that fancy new tailwheel support. I wouldn't have. Now he is flying around with just those three rivets through the tailpost (and of course the beefy rivets where FUS 31 goes into that last fuselage bulkhead) and it could of course come to pass that those aft rivets, not having the extra support of the rivets through the new model tailwheel support are doing what people have described. I really shoved and pushed onto that elevator control assy, but I could not move it, as stated, solid as can be.
I read that article and saw the sad picture in the latest Rebel Rouser (Rebel on its back). I can't figure out what landing gear bolt failed on that conventional gear? Anybody? That's it, regards, Geert Frank.

Geert and All,

Good to here yours(fus 31) is holding together, but make sure that you check it during your annuals!

Ref. the 3 rivets thru Fus 31 into the tail post. Both aircraft in question have a reinforcing doubler(.032) over top of the Fus 31 from the tail post forward, to past the tail spring attatch bulkhead. Howards rebel also has the newer(quote "engine mount bolt style") tail spring attatch bulkhead installed(which by the way is no stronger than the original multi strap arrangement when installed properly, only easier to install). Howards A/C had approximately 100 hours T.T on it when I found the sheared rivets last year(about 30 on wheels, 70 on floats) The rivets where fine when it was switched to floats!(of course I checked everything out before you test flew it Bob!). As of this year when I found the cracks it has approx. 200 hours T.T. on it! My Rebel had about 250 hours(all on wheels) on it last year when I found my rivets sheared (they look fine this year but I have put very little time on it in the last year as I have been flying my UTVA 66's instead).

I'd much rather hear that everyone with a flying Rebel has opened up their tailcone for nothing, than to hear about someones fin falling off. I hope everyone is checking theirs though, as I would have chaulked it up to improper installation if it had of only happened to one aircraft, but not 2 in the same hanger!

Blue skies and tailwinds, Wayne

Hello all,
Today I spoke with Wayne O'Shea regarding a failed Maule Tundra Tail-wheel
mount. This mount fractured at the end of the tail-spring where the
mounting bolt hole is. On Monday I am going to take it to a local foundry
for their opinion before I return it to Maule. The casting looks to be very
porus with what I would take to have been air bubbles in the pour. Anyway
it broke on roll-out at a local grass-strip and remained attached to our
Rebel via the chains and thrashed the bottom of the rudder and the
trim-tab. I have a spare Scott 3200 from a Pawnee I've been planning on
installing on the Rebel for a while but I kept putting it off.
This is the prelude to the rest of the story.
Today when Jennifer and I were removing the all the tail surfaces for
repair I discovered the 3 rivets from Fus31 to the tail-post where sheared
off, again. Our plane first flew Mar99, I replaced these rivets in Aug99
(72hrs), and now at (126hrs) I will likely commit the O'Shea mod.
Elaine at MAM shipping has once again been outstanding with her efforts to
assist with our needs. Not to say that I don't think everyone else at
Murphy is equally great, but I seem to spend more time with Elaine.
Best regards to all,
Angus McKenzie, Rebel 049

All,

I had a quick and positive response from Brain Godden regarding the FUS-31
cracking and rivet shearing and we have conversed 3 times since. Service
bulletin, etc. is currently being worked on by Brian, Darryl and Grant, to
be issued in the very near future!

I'll keep you posted on the MAM "designed" fix! I imagine it will be a
doubler and RV1613 rivets or the use of RR5404 stainless rivets in place of
the RV1410's. Time will tell if they adopt my fix or come up with another
one.

Brian, if the rivets are sheared off, drill up to #11 and install RV1613
rivets. Also suggest to check the corners very carefully for cracks and stop
drill if they are there. Then put a .032 doubler from behind the rivets at
the tail spring attach bulkhead to the tail post.(I suggest you do the
doubler even if you don't find cracks!) At the tail post end of the doubler
bend a flange to overlap the existing one. The doubler can only be drilled
around the perimeter (as the fin is in the way) and riveted down with
RV1410's.

Just to let everyone know, the "O'Shea" mod is now known as Service Bulletin
080520Reb and is available for viewing on MAM's site in their "support"
section. The only thing I do differently is that I do not put reliefs in at
the tab bend. I have just bent the tab up on my .032 doubler, so not to give
it a place to crack again. I highly recommend you all take the 20 minutes to
perform this "Urgency: High" service bulletin ASAP, even if you have not
found any problems in this area to date. It can be done without removing any
tail pieces other than the two fairings (only slightly easier if you remove
the rudder), so there is really no excuse not to do it NOW!

Chuck, absolutely no thanks required! I'm just one of those guys that
couldn't sleep at night, if I didn't let a problem be known to everyone and
found out it hurt someone! As for MAM, absolutely NO persistence was
required on my part! The last time I suggested this to the factory, it
wasn't deemed a high urgency thing at the time (by myself) and they were to
check the factory prototype when time permitted (you know how that works).
After finding another cracked FUS-31 and hearing about others in the field,
I felt it was time to do something about it again. Brian Godden had
knowledge of this problem as the factory demo he was shipped in Europe had
this FUS-31 problem when he received it and between Brian, Grant and Darryl,
they we most responsive in issuing this Service Bulletin in LESS than a
week, agreeing that this attach point needed some strengthening. This is why
it is highly suggested to do the doubler and larger rivets NOW, now mater
what stage you are at in your construction or if your flying Rebel hasn't
showed signs of a problem YET!
