Flap Handle & landing

Hello Rick,

Say, I too have heard that dumping the flaps right at touchdown can kill
lift, prevent bounce and make braking more effective. On the other
hand, an old time tailwheel instructor told me that someday, when you
take that split second to dump flaps, you might not be as on top of the
landing as you otherwise would be--and that's when it is going to bite
you with a ground loop. I'm not criticizing your or anyone else's
technique...just providing food for thought that was shared with me
once.

I used a 1" OD pipe (it fits nicely into your hand) .....

The handle is a GREAT improvement ! ... (not boasting tooooo much here
:o)

I can come in on FULL flap (positive obviously) ... let her flare ...
and the INSTANT the wheels touch - I give her FULL negative flap ..
result NO BOUNCE !!! - (makes you look like you really know what you are

doing :o) :o) :o)

PS - Make sure you are using the LONGER handle (about 10 or 12 inches
from pivot to handle) ... the first one worked well - but was too short
& required 2 hands to get into negative / reflexed position in flight
.... the longer one can be done with one hand.

Flap Handle & landing

I do the same as Rick does, on gusty days. If you need to come in a little
hot to get her to the ground the airplane then wants to float or will
balloon. If it decides to balloon and go around/runway length is getting too
late, I throw into full reflex. I remember the first time I did it from
about 3 feet up and said out loud to myself "this is going to hurt", but all
it did was paste the airplane firmly to the grass and rolled out nicely. I
use it quite a bit now on anything but calm days. Doesn't take much of a
gust to lift a Rebel wing...which is more likely to cause a ground loop if
unchecked than the quick throw of the flap handle into reflex (once it
becomes second nature at least and your not looking for the handle).

Flap Handle & landing

G'day Ted !

I appreciate you input .... and I'll make sure I don't let that
happen !

So far I've managed to get our beast into some fairly hairy spots (and
out again :o) :o) :o) - places that I KNOW you would NOT be taking most
spam cans - more a testament to the easy handling of the Rebel than MY
flying ability I think !

The more I fly in "other aircraft" - the happier I am that we built a
REBEL !

G'day Wayne !

Yep ..... it takes less than a half a second to put the flaps from
FULL DOWN to FULL UP (reflexed) with either your, or my, flap handle
design ..... and I ALWAYS 3 point her onto the deck - (except in 30
Knot cross winds , where she gets 2 pointed (rear and one side) first !
