I have a 28V system in my Moose. I want to install a std 12V cigarette
lighter to power and charge things. From what [little] I understand,
would it be as simple as finding the right size resistor to install
between the bus and the 12V lighter? I've seen some DC-to-DC power
converters out there, but, as they are TSO'd, they seem outrageously
expensive for the [simple?] task I want to accomplish.

Has anyone done this? Any input on what part(s) to buy or what's
involved?

Ted,
The resistor will be right ONLY for one current draw. We regularly make
these up using a simple 7812 voltage regulator and a couple of .1 ufd
capacitors. You can get them at Radio shack. You will have to mount it to a
piece of aluminum as a heat sink and it will give you up to one amp of 12
volt current. The cost of the parts is about $4.50
While GPS and other things will accept up to 32 volts, cell phones do not
like 24 volts. They tend to smoke. As we all know electricity is nothing but
smoke contained in wires. If you let the smoke out they do not work!

If you need larger current capability there are other higher current
regulators available.

You could buy two of everything and charge them together in series. :)

20A 12/24VDC autotransformers usually go for about $180 if you need a
lot of power. 5A ones are usually about as much.
