Congrats Alan...a BIG milestone !!! Guess they still haven't got the MD-RA
programmed equalled out everywhere... as there were some that would give the
flight permit right then and there. Keep on TC to get it processed for you.
They are even delayed issuing AULA's flight permits these days and they only
need a C of R !

Congrats Alan: I know the feeling - it's like having a weight lifted from
your shoulders. Murphy make a great kit and if the manual is followed there
should not be any inspection problems structurally, it's all the little
things you hope you haven't missed. I had a couple of bolts with not enough
thread showing, rubber boots required on all positive terminals, fuel (site
tube) and flap position markings, safety springs on throttle and mixture and
a few other minor things. It's an exciting time now, but just wait until
your first flight - nothing tops that - not even sex. (my wife never reads
this thread). Now I must get back to Rebel 725 and "keep at it" as in the

Bob et al:

It seems that my inspector has to send his report to the Chief Inspector
(Jamie), who can then sign me off for flight, so I believe TC is not
involved at this point. I'm told to expect about 3 weeks delay.

For those interested, the statistics are:

Build time to date: 1,880 hrs + 350 hrs for the floats (so much for the
advertised 700 hrs!)
Elapsed time: 30 months, which I didn't think was bad, considering I have a
full time job
Empty weight: 1,430 lbs on Montana 2200 amphibs.
Equipment: Aerosport Power O360, Sensenich fixed pitch prop, Grand Rapids
EIS/EFIS, Narco Escort II, AT150, SelCal encoder. All electric airplane -
no vacuum system, no cabin heat.

At this point, the airplane is unpainted, and has no interior. Until I get
the gross weight increase approved by TC, it's going to stay that way,
because I'm only 26 lbs below the maximum allowable empty weight, according
to the CARS formula (well, maybe I could manage a thin coat of paint!). The
only thing I though was a bit heavy was the seat foam, which is ConforFoam.
But it is comfortable.

Can't believe after all these years the inspectors still aren't trusted and
it has to go back to Alexandre to take one last look at your W & B before
sending it off to TC. If Jamie does your final you fly that day...but no
other inspectors in Ontario.

Al, what do the Montana 2200's weight by themselves??

Thought you were going to up the weight on the original paperwork....Ontario
MD-RA not going for that either?

... and thanks for the data on your Elite Amphib ... will anticipate 612e
coming in somewhere around the same weight. Gross for a standard Elite is
1800 ... what gross weight are you setting for your amphib?

1) they're bigger
2) I have the optional hydraulic retract
3) they have bigger wheels
4) the rigging is more substantial
5) they use metal/braided stainless lines throughout

Yes, you're right on the paperwork. At least we don't have to wait for TC
to sign off. That could take forever.

I finally managed to ttalk to Wayne Juniper and he indicated the way to go
was as I described. Put the designer's gross weight on the Initial C of A
application, then apply for a higher number when you get the restrictions
taken off. They may require another climb test, but I intend to do three
tests at 1690, 1790 and 1890 lbs and show by extrapolation that there's no
way it won't do 350 f.p.m. at the higher weight. I plan to go for 2100 lbs.

The way I see it, the stress limits are calulated on the basis of a design
basis vertical gust. The stress imposed by this gust is directly
prioportional to weight, and proportional to the square of airspeed. On
amphibs, my cruise airspeed will probably be reduced by about 25% relative
to the wheeled airplane, so I would have to go 50% over gross before
generating the same stress. I guess I could make a major design change -
move the yellow arc down a bit!

Any comments from you aeronautical engineers out there?

Hi Alan,

Congratulations on your inspection. I have been away and am just catching up
on "millions" of emails that had piled up. Randy and I first flew our Moose
on May 20 and so we know first hand the well deserved excitement you are
feeling.

You have a lot of great times ahead to look forward to. Randy and I just
attended our first Seaplane fly-in last weekend in Speculator NY. We where
completely caught off guard when we and the Moose were awarded the "Spirit
of Speculator Award" a most coveted award. So, good luck with your test
flying and you better clear of the mantel above the fireplace to make room
for all the recognition you will receive.
