All:

I have had a problem with the tail wheel on the Moose that I know from
other builders has been a problem. It has to do with the tail wheel angle
being not at 90 degree or aft which makes it shimmy like crazy--even hard
to push around the floor of the hangar.

I talked to Darryl Murphy who flat out denied this was a problem and said
only one other builder has complained about this problem. I know for a
fact that it has been a problem on several aircraft (many others are on
floats or amphibs so it is moot for them). I told Darryl I would be glad
to do a survey of people who have had problems and had to make changes to
their tail wheels to fix this issue.

Please let me know if you have had a problem, made a fix, or if you have
not had a problem. Also let me know if you have informed Darryl of the
problem since he says only one owner has called about this.

I am getting pretty fed up with the factory on issues like this.

Hello Brent:
We have problems with our tail wheel on our moose just trying to push it around in the hangar.
Have tried lowering the stinger to the bottom hole to try and get the axis of the tail wheel angle to 90 deg. Still not enough. Have not put in a lot of time on this as we are still building. Soon we will have to address this problem. Have NOT contacted MAM about this as of yet.

Always open for any suggestions on the correct way to fix any of the problems anyone has found with the moose.

Hello Brent:

I built a Rebel. Had to take about 17* of bend out of the tail spring to
make the bolt vertical. This of course is a must do.

Anybody can take one look at this and see it will not work. I made a
completely longer front mount with more holes, but it still may not be enough.

I flew mine for 40 hours, and it worked OK even though the pivot plane
was not coplanar with the earth. But the ultimate fix was to put in on
Montana Amphib floats.

Brent, I don't have mine in yet. But I have heard it is a problem, I have
pictures of at least two Moose that have bent (purposely <grin>) their tail
stingers to flatten out the angle of the stinger. I suspect there is a
bunch more out there like that.

I guess the problem is that without the factory acknowledging the problem
(or any others except for the leaking quick build tanks), we don't have any
criteria to have the stinger bent. It also needs heat treating with the
bending.

I am assembling this data to send to Darryl to try to get some support.

I thought I would throw my two cents in on the tail wheel issue. Our tail
wheel post is not perpendicular to the ground either. So moving the
airplane around on the ground requires a little more effort than it should.
However, when taxiing, this has not proved to be much of a problem. If we
make a turn and unlock the tail wheel, then attempt to move straight forward
again, we must apply a little power and rudder to get it locked again. At
first, this bothered me. But now that I'm used to it, it has just become a
nuisance. It has never been a problem on landing however the tail wheel has
never become unlocked on landing either. I suppose, under certain
conditions, it could offer some challenge. Once again, I think this is an
inherent design problem because the post SHOULD be straight. We thought
about having the stinger bent and re-annealed but after conferring with the
local shop that has helped us so much, we decided against it. The mechanic
took us on a tour of several ag cats and pointed out that the tail posts had
varying degrees of being perpendicular. He also pointed out that as we fly
more and begin to load the Moose, the stinger will bend naturally and will
become less of a problem over time. So there you have my two cents worth---
probably worth less than a penny.
