Ted,

A very well done website and I look forward to reading about your trip.

One complaint though - I lost track of time surfing to all the great
information on your "links" page so you've set my aircraft completion time
back by two hours (or more) <grin>.

I know you are still working on the list of tools and spare parts.

I'll post some additional ideas this afternoon.

float plane here in Colorado, so it's just not practical for me to get
floats. In fact, I've never, ever, seen a float plane at any airport
here in Colorado!

If our planned route takes us anywhere near one of you, let me know; I'd
welcome the opportunity to stop by and say hello. I have about a
hundred things to do on the plane and such to finish getting ready. I
had grand plans to paint the plane and finish the interior in January or
February. Seems things kept getting in the way of that, so after we
return that's tops on the list...

Warren, I use both Explorer and the Firefox browser, they both are
connecting fine right now (as of 30 seconds ago)?

Mentioned your trip to my wife and her first comment was very insightful...
"I hope he brings lots of bug dope!". Also, just in case you didn't know...
Alaska has equipment requirements that are in addition to FAA requirements.

Alaska state law requires that no airman may make a flight inside the state
with an aircraft unless emergency equipment is carried as follows:

1. The minimum equipment to be carried during summer months is as follows:
(for all single engine and for multiengine aircraft licensed to carry 15
passengers or less)

a. food for each occupant sufficient to sustain life for two weeks

b. one axe or hatchet

c. one first aid kit

d. one pistol, revolver, shotgun or rifle and ammunition for same

e. one small gill net and an assortment of tackle such as hooks, flies,
lines, sinkers, etc.

f. one knife

g. two small boxes of matches

h. one mosquito headnet for each occupant

i. two small signalling devices such as colored smoke bombs, railroad fuses
or very pistol shells, in sealed metal containers

2. In addition to the above, the following must be carried as minimum
equipment from October 15 to April 1 of each year:

a. one pair of snowshoes

b. one sleeping bag

c. one wool blanket for each occupant over four

Of course since you'll be flying through Canada, carrying a gun might pose a
problem. I know a lot of people up here don't carry a gun when they fly,
but just wanted to let you know if you get ramp checked, this equipment is
supposed to be in the airplane. You might want to ask Transport Canada
about this specifically, I know for a while they were allowing long rifles,
but not pistols.

They removed the firearm requirement five or six years ago.

If you do a search online you will find only the old stuff, the new Alaska
Supplement shows current requirements which are essential the same as below
but without the firearm requirement.

All that gun's going to do is piss the bear off anyhow...unless you really
know how to use it. If you do want to travel with a long riffle or shot
gun..shouldn't be a big problem but you'll need to get the proper forms and
I believe submitted in advance of boarder xing in both directions. Hand
gun...forget it coming in to Canada...land of only criminals can have guns.

Sounds like a wonderful trip. Something to keep the dream alive.

I'm not sure if the Canadian rules have changed but when I
worked up in the Territories we always carried a "survival rifle"
which is a 22 cal barrel over a 20 GA shot gun barrel.

It would be interesting to see if that is still allowed in Canada.
Of course with proper "registration papers"

I carried a 12ga to Alaska last summer. Canadian Customs came out measured
the barrel (min 18.5 inches), overall length, charged me $50 for a permit
good for a year and said don't keep it loaded in the airplane. On the way
back through Canada I declared it when I called in, but they never met us at
the border for an inspection.

Sounds like a wonderful trip. Something to keep the dream alive.

I'm not sure if the Canadian rules have changed but when I
worked up in the Territories we always carried a "survival rifle"
which is a 22 cal barrel over a 20 GA shot gun barrel.

It would be interesting to see if that is still allowed in Canada.
Of course with proper "registration papers"

One of the things that I appreciated seeing from Ted's site is the fly-ties
tiedown kit. Having lost an ultralight to tie-down break away I'm pretty
wary of winds coming up while parked -- I know wing loading helps but I shake
my head seeing how planes are sometimes left.

Any pro-con comments to off-airport tie-down methods such as the fly-ties? I
would think too, that if possible you want the plane parked tail into the
wind (controls locked in neutral position) and a fly-tie set on the tail as
well. And btw, Ted, thanks for the web site -- look forward to "wasting" more
valuable build time myself as your trip gets going!!

Ted,
I have told this story to several people so I hope I'm not repeating it. Two
friends and six teenage kids were rafting last year in Alaska. All the warm
weather had the water levels up on the river. The first rapids were such
that they lost one of two rafts the first day of a 5 day trip. The raft that
was lost had most of the food. They knew the river well enough that down
river were more and tougher rapids. Spooked by the upset with the kids they
decided to camp on a sandbar. They shot a few birds but mostly ate bugs for
6 days until they were overdue and rescued.
The two chopper rides came to over $5000. I asked what piece of survival
equipment would you have next time. His answer was a satellite phone, inside
his life jacket.
On our trip I rented a satellite phone it was about $200 for a month with 30
minutes of air time. When we were in the plane the phone was in a plastic
bag inside my Stormy Seas lifevest. As with most survival gear we didn't
need to use it. I felt it was cheap insurance.
