I am thinking of getting some 3/32 cherrymax rivets for nutplates. There is
a lot of choices of grip length. I'm wondering if they can be a bit long and
still be ok like avex? Also do they work with a standard puller? I suppose I
would just get 3/32 countersunk avex if those are available, but the
supplier I'm looking at has the cherrymax advertised for use with nutplates.
I already have some 3/32 c.s. solid rivets, but there are a couple spots on
the elevator and rudder tips where I won't be able to get a squeezer in
(Wayne was nice enough to give me a bunch of clipnuts for attaching the
tips, but they are coming out a very tight fit to the elev/rudd, so I feel
the added thickness of the clipnuts will be too much). I went all composite
on the tips, and they are coming out really nice. A bit of extra work
though.

Hi Jesse,

For what it's worth typical cherrymax rivets are a real pain to drill out if
you every need to replace or repair. Typically they are overkill unless you
really need the shear strength. ACS has some 3/32 pull rivets. I have used
them in a few spots and they work fine don't remember the designation but
should be easy to spot in the catalog. Grip length is flexible like the
avex.

Hi Jesse

I would stick with avex for that job. Cherrymax are great but you don't need
the shear strength they provide, they are much harder to remove if you mess
one up, and you'll probably need a proper puller to put them in as they need
much more force to install.
I'm only using cherrymax on the door posts for the added shear strength.

If you are talking about the steel cherry rivets specifically sold for
nutplates (part number in archives) then yes they function like cheaper
aluminum "pop" or "N" rivets and pull essentially zero to rated grip
length. I use them in some places and the 2/16 length is adequate and
even the 1/16 will do in a lot of places. If anyone needs a couple of
longer ones for something unusual, I think I have a few from a 'grab
bag' that I can drop in the mail. The countersunk ones are 100 degree
aviation countersink angle. These are not "cherrymax" and are not
suitable for anything other than nutplates.

Avex rivets do not come in 3/32 as far as I know. However I have found
that the cheap "pop" rivets (both countersunk and protruding head) seem
to work fine to hold nutplates, at least for #10 and smaller bolts if
not for all sizes. Obviously large bolts are more likely to fail the
weaker aluminum rivet. These countersunk ones are 120 degree but they
work fine in 100 dimples. The cherry rivets are cad coated but there is
still less corrosion risk with aluminum. The aluminum ones are also 1/5
the cost where I am.

I have trouble believing that those super thin clipnuts from Wayne
aren't a better idea though. I've yet to find an application where their
thickness was really a factor. They are very thin compared to commercial
clipnuts.

I usually get aluminum pop rivets from Spaenaur at about cdn$12. per 500
with coated steel mandrels.
I've seen them in industrial fastener outlets and occasionally in
hardware stores but places like MSC would likely have better prices as
would Avdel Textron where I get avex rivets from.
