I have encountered a problem with the standard MAM (=ACS) gascolator
when using mo-gas. The sealing gasket swells. I notice the current ACS
catalogue says "not for use with auto fuel". This gasket would appear
to be the only reason for not using it with mo-gas. Anybody know of a
source for a suitable gasket, or do I just roll my own from cork?

I don't know what it looks like but I've made many of my own gaskets from
gasket material you can get at any auto store.

Alan,
If you can get a sheet of Viton (rubberlike) material it is impervious
to auto fuel. I would be careful with cork as it may crumble.

If your Gascolator is similar to the one on my Long-EZ (I think that it is
also an ACS), there is also an o-ring at the drain end. You might want to
look at that also.

When the time comes, I think that I am going to use Andair selector and
gascolator as I believe they can use both fuels.

I already have the Andair gascolator and fuel tank selector. I'm assured
they will both accept all types of fuel (mogas/avgas/jetA)

I just had the old ACS gascolator apart on customers Pegastol that's running
a 912S. This is the one with the gold metal bowl, and die cast head...same
as what was supplied in MAM FWF kits in previous years. He runs Premium car
gas 99% of the time with the odd 100 LL he gets here when a little short on
fuel to make it to his cottage over Barry's Bay way (Aylen Lake). Absolutely
no swelling of the gasket apparent....but I have seen it before on another
airplane with same unit. Guess it depends on who's "chemical mixture" you
are buying and what additives they have thrown in it (like alcohol). This is
why I always run av gas in a Lycoming. Too many other hose/gasket/tank
sealant things to negate the savings, let alone tolerating the smell when
running car gas.

Further to Terrys comment, Andair gascolators use Viton gaskets which
are suitable for 100LL and present formulations of Mogas. This from
"Mr. Andair" at Sun&Fun as I purchased a spare gasket.

Yes, it did occur to me that the O ring might be be subject to the same
swelling. However, no sign of leakage there, and it isn't sticking either.
The same goes for the drains on the fuel tanks. Seems to me I've seen all
kinds of O rings in automaotive fuel systems, and I can't remember ever
having seen a caveat on O rings, but if anybody knows the full story, I'd
like to hear. I got a piece of 1/16" gasket material from the local auto
parts store, and it seems to work well. It's a dark grey rubber like
material, but not as soft as the original rubber seal on the ACS gascolator.

I have used mogas with my 0320 most of the time, but did have a
problem early on with a couple of fuel tank drains. They started
to leak after a while, and the little O ring just seemed to eat
away, so that it wouldn't seal anymore. I ended up replacing them
with some small O rings I found at an automotive parts shop, and
no problem since. Funny thing, though, I had two others from the
same batch that I am still using on the bottom of the fuselage
without a problem. So I guess its possible some O rings just
aren't up to the job. Good news, is that it didn't take long to
find that out. My first clue actually was that they would spring
out further, and my doors would catch on them during opening. I
notched them out a bit more to clear, but shortly after they
started to leak, and I knew there was something odd going on. No
problems with my standard homebuilders gascolator.

From memory I believe the common buna-N o-rings are supposed to be good
for gasolene. I've had good luck with them.
However whenever I have a choice, I spend a couple of extra pennys and
buy viton which is supposed to be excellant for gasolene. Spaenaur is a
good source.

No problems with Proseal itself...just hope you didn't use any sloshing
compounds! Even without sloshing, you had better still be vigilant for any
alcohol content in that mogas.

If you have any sloshing compound in your tanks it will soften and lift it.
Ticking time bomb that one day may just come lose in a large piece and
smother your finger strainers.

Alcohol will rot your fuel line from gascolator to the carb as well...but
then again car gas does a good job at that as well on some hose types. Not
such an issue in a gravity feed, but when running a pump it has been known
to suck the swelled internal hose shut when it has been softened by alcohol
or car gas.

FWIW, alcohol also doesn't produce as much BTU (read HP) as gasoline will.
Some of you probably remember Ron Newburgs "Alcohol Express" C150
taildragger. It was a DOG when running alcohol.

As far as I know, SHELL is the only Canadian supplier that DOES NOT
add alcohol. We always ran Shell BRONZE in the left tank on the O-235,
and 100 LL in the right, and Shell GOLD (higher octane) for the Rotax 912.
Never had a problem, EXCEPT - don't leave it sitting for more than 3 months
TOPS !! After that, just drain it for the lawnmower - IF you can get THAT
to start .... all mogas deteriorates much faster, since about 4 years ago !

And the alcohol does eat aluminum !
