Rudder trim?

Hello all,
I am getting ready to close up the rudder and had a question
about rudder trim? Several Months ago Ted Waltman was nice enough to
take me up in his Moose and allowed me to take alot of pictures!!(thanks
again Ted) anyway while going through my pictures I noticed the rudder trim on
Teds plane and was wondering how many others have added this and if it is
worth it?? thanks.

After flying the M14 demonstrator without it, I added rudder trim also.

Scott and Britt,
Since you guys added the trim is there a place I can get info on this
installation (i.e. parts list servo, piano hinge ribs) and also how did
you size the trim (use the same instructions as on the elevator?) thanks.

Bob - If I remember right there is some good info back in the archives - I
talked to RC Allen (he laughs about the size of the elevator trim on the
3500) and chose 1/2 a bay (added a rib in the midpoint) so it was about 6"
and 2" deep. To keep it up away from elevator interference I put mine in the
bay under the mid-hinge.

Rudder trim?

Britt,
Did you use the same servo and backing plates, gussets, horn etc. as in the
elevator? Did you by chance take any pictures as you were building? I read all
I could find on the search and could not find the answers to these questions.

Rudder trim?

Bob,
I used the same servo, with the same backing plate. First time I made th
e
tab with the same chord as the elevator. That was too goofy looking so I
remade it with a two inch chord and 12 inch tall. Just made up my own
trim spar, horn, etc.

I have pics. but am on the road for three more days.

Al put his servo under the fin and used a flex cable back through fin spa
r
and into the rudder.

Rudder trim?

Hi Bob !

Feedback from the guys at Sun n Fun was that you will be a LOT
happier with rudder trim if you also round the front end of the rudder
horn so it trails better .....

Rudder trim?

Bob,

Are there any pictures of a "rounded rudder horn"? Keith mentioned doing it
to the Elite ... does rounding it off mean making it a constant radius
around the leading edge? ... rather then the currently blunt leading edge?

Rudder trim?

Hi Bob !

This applies equally to the SR/Moose and Elite - you are right,
it means rounding to a smooth curve, rather than the blunt front end.
This will give smooth airflow in all positions, rather than 'grabbing'
when the flat is exposed.

Don't know of any photos, but if you can find pics of the
original factory SR elevator horns, when it was sold, they are rounded,
the same as current horns and rudder horns should be.

This is fairly easy to do, as the rounded section will clear inside the
stab leading edge recess. It might mean making a new rib, or
several small leading edge ribs, or just a section of heavy tube, sliced
in half .... to wrap the leading edge skin over. Whatever you do, it
will make an improvement !

Rudder trim?

Hi Bob ... great to be back. Had to take a three week hiatus, but am back
on the Elite project again. The left float fitting and door sill (new) are
all riveted in ... currently working on (replacing) the inside floor wraps.
These wraps weren't riveted to the curved part of the rib, and I can see
why. Unless one uses a clear flexible sheet of plastic, those flanges sure
would be hard to hit. So I made several 4" long curved tabs that are
riveted to the face on the opposite side from the flange. They provide a
nice wide target to hit. None of the bottom inside wraps were riveted to
the bulkheads along the corner curved part ... but they will be soon ...
will have some pics of these tabs on my repair/mod log site soon. Also on
the forward side skin, the .020 skin is swapped out for a .025 skin with
interspaced fwd door post rivets. Although it may seem like it, I'm really
not trying to build an A-10 ... just a good strong float plane ... :-)

Hi Bob !

This applies equally to the SR/Moose and Elite - you are right,
it means rounding to a smooth curve, rather than the blunt front end.
This will give smooth airflow in all positions, rather than 'grabbing'
when the flat is exposed.

Don't know of any photos, but if you can find pics of the
original factory SR elevator horns, when it was sold, they are rounded,
the same as current horns and rudder horns should be.

This is fairly easy to do, as the rounded section will clear inside the
stab leading edge recess. It might mean making a new rib, or
several small leading edge ribs, or just a section of heavy tube, sliced
in half .... to wrap the leading edge skin over. Whatever you do, it
will make an improvement !

Feedback from the guys at Sun n Fun was that you will be a LOT
happier with rudder trim if you also round the front end of the rudder
horn so it trails better .....
