Question about window sealant.
I've been trying to find a good sealant for my Lexan side windows. I
tried some GE Silicone II, and two different Urethane sealants on test
samples. A week later, the Urethane sealants still haven't cured and
I'm not all that thrilled with the adhesion of the Silicone. Maybe I
need to use some ProSeal Polysulfide instead. What have others been
using?

Tom,

I am planning on using clear Lexel, available at Ace Hardware stores. This
is a general indoor/outdoor sealant described as being superior to silicon.
Some RV builders have used it and reported good results. Give it a test and
let us know how it works.

Hi Guys,
I used the white Lexel for the side windows and skylights and it works
great. We were able to paint right up to the edges of the windows and not
worry about silicon contamination of the aluminum.

Tim, Al and all:
This past week I have compared a couple of additional window sealants. The
one that Tim and Al recommended called Lexel (made by Sashco) and a new GE
Silicone II called XST (Extreme Silicone Technology). My testing was done
with sealant placed between a piece of Lexan (Polycarbonate) and epoxy
primed piece of 6061 Alum. The sealant was about 1 inch wide and approx.
.010" thick.
After 4 days the GE XST shows the most cure and is difficult to separate the
Lexan from Alum. The bond failure is between the sealant and
Lexan.(probably a good thing if you ever want to remove/replace a window).
It is also paintable and apparently water based.(instructions say clean up
with soapy water).
The Lexel is slower curing and when I separate the Lexan from the Alum., it
appears the sealant adhesion is equal to each material. I suspect the bond
will be very difficult to break when fully cured, making window replacement
more difficult without damaging surrounding structure. Lexel is also
paintable but not water based.
Conclusion: I think each will work very well. I only wonder how difficult
it will be to replace a window if Lexel sealant is used.

Hi Tom !

For what it's worth, I've always used Bostick 1100 - the stuff
recommended by the windshield manufacturers. It has relatively
low adhesion and great flexibility - this is desirable, given that the
Lexan must 'float' in the frames to allow for expansion with heat.
(a windshield will expand well over 1/4" in summer ...)

Bostick 1100 comes in caulking gun tubes, is easy to work with,
inexpensive, and available in colours - white, grey, black ....
used the black for windshield, white for skylights, as it is paintable.
It's available from most building supply houses.

Am in the process of puting mine in this weekend. Am using RTV 733 on both
sides. Have the two sides done and will be doing the rest tomorrow. Taping
around the retainer on the window and cleaning as I go. So far looks good
and I have enough on the inside to prevent chafing. Will use the 733
between the glass and all retainer strips and a polyurethane under the
fiberglass lower strip against the aluminum.
