Hi all ...
My question to all of you folks is did any of you have a gap between the
forward attach point of the vertial fin (the same one you move left or right
3/4 inch for engine offset ) and FUS-31/bulkhead doubler ... see figure 37
chapter 13 step 107... I have about a 1/4 inch gap. I first checked the
angle
of FUS-31 but found it matched the angle of the other bulkheads.... The
skin
for the fin is prepunched which set the forward and rear spar ( and attach
point ) at a set distance apart....... The horizontal bulkhead (fus- 31 ) ,
see fig 35, sets the fin at its position away from fus-36 ...... So the
choices are

#1, add a 1/4 spacer under the forward attach point of the fin ( where it
attaches with nine 3/16 rivets
#2, cut the tab of the aft end of the horizontal bulkhead , fus-31 , ( where
it attaches to the aft spar of the vertical fin with 3 rivets ) shorting it
1/4 inch and then add a piece of angle ,st-40 , for the three rivets to
attach
to the spar... This would also shorten the aircraft by 1/4 inch..
#3, Your idea goes here ....

Jim:

I had much the same problem I just added a spacer. You could probably do
the cutting and save 2-3 onces maybe. I think adding the spacer is easier.
When you do this your rivets will not reach so I used 4- 3/16 bolts(with
Murphy's approval).

Yes - I had this problem the first time I built my tail cone however I
had the pleasure of doing it again as the tail cone somehow moved. The
second time, in order to avoid this possible problem, I mounted the fin
while constructing the tail cone to ensure there was no gap. I pass
this on as a hint to those not yet at this stage.
