Aileron hinge bushings?

Post by Scott Aldrich » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:24 am

Are you installing bushings in the aileron and flap hinge brackets?

A bunch of us have put bronze bushing in the rudder and elevator hinges.
The Moose has a tendency for the outboard elevator hinge holes to wear and
get sloppy.

I was assuming I would do the same to the flap and aileron hinges; however I
didn't really pay much attention to how they worked, I only pinned them to
align things.

It looks like the bolt should hold the steel bushing tight against the hinge
bracket and the brass bushing rotates around that (steel bushing is wider
than the brass). It seems with the bolt unable to move, unlike the tail,
additional bushings in the hinge brackets may be unnecessary??

Whadayathink?

Aileron hinge bushings?

Scott - I am at a good spot for this sort of thing right now - I am trying
to envision your solution -

Do I need to get the bushings into the wing hinge brackets??

I would like to see how everything fits (flap/aileron) but was planning on
waiting till I had it skinned up -

Also - I loved your aileron/flap trailing edge extensions - Good job

Aileron hinge bushings?

Post by Scott Aldrich » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:24 am

Britt, I'm thinking the aileron and flap hinge brackets that are attached to
the wing don't need the bushings?? Not sure though, just wondering what
others are doing and if anyone has wear or slop here like the tail??

Aileron hinge bushings?

Post by Al Paxhia » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:24 am

Scott,
Your correct the steel bushing does lock tight against the hinge and rotate
inside the brass bushing on the aileron. Do you have a picture of the
bushings that you used on the elevator?

Aileron hinge bushings?

Post by Scott Aldrich » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:24 am

We used straight 3/8 OD 1/4 ID bronze bushings in all the hinges on both the
stab spar and elevator and same on the rudder/fin except the fin bushing
were hat type. I think it was too tight of fit to put hat bushing on the
elevator. Wayne used to have pictures posted by they may have been dumped
in the archive crash awhile back. I will see if I can find mine.

I have thinner wall bushings (5/16 OD) I was going to put in the aileron and
flap hinges but may not now.

I will go check Ron's outboard aileron hinges on Friday; if they are not
sloppy I suspect it is a waste of time to put them in.

Aileron hinge bushings?

Post by Al Paxhia » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:24 am

Thanks Scott,
I see no wear in the ailerons but the outboard elevator hinges are starting
to show some wear, 460 hours. It's worth checking Ron's, as it has been
said, the M14 pulses are much greater than the Lycoming.
