EGT probe location

I don't know if there is a common distance or if it varies from engine to
engine, but can anyone tell me how far from the exhaust port the EGT probe
should be mounted? If it does vary I can't imagine that there would be much
difference. I just need a ballpark figure since I'm putting it on one of
the exhaust header tubes on my Chevy and there won't be any specification
for that. I only have a one-probe system so it won't be used much as a
diagnostic tool, just an aid to leaning. So it's probably only important to
not get too close to the port and end up burning up probes.

3" to 3.5" from the cylinders exhaust face seems to work well on a Lycoming.

When I bought new probes for my MX the probes themselves were designed for
different lengths. The ones I bought were 4-6 inches... make sure the tip
of the probe is centered in the tube.
