Why weren't you comfortable with tapping the tubes. Threaded bolts are
stronger than the pull strength of the rivets.

Actually I wasn't entirely comfortable with that so I cut the bottom
flanges off one then riveted half inch high brackets to the floor and
bolted it all together. Same result - a removeable control tube. Think
the idea came from Brian.

The strength of the 10-32 fine threads in the floor tubes was what I
wondered about. Probably fine but I imagined tight elevator cables etc.
and if I start getting concerned I usually just do something else or
make it stronger ;)

As long as you cut good threads, no problem. For those that have followed
the thread that I started earlier about this...make sure you use some good
cutting fluid (and clean the tap after every hole) so that you get good
clean threads... if persuing this removable column option. If there is any
mental worry that eight AN3's aren't strong enough go with the AN4's !
