Scott,

Did you do anything to beef up the main gear?

Ted

Oh, why I am at it, I still think the main gear attach set up on the
SR/Moose is crap too, and that "anomaly" will arise (or collapse:) )
again in the future.

Moose Main Gear?

Scott,

Did you do anything to beef up the main gear?

Ted
Short answer - yes. Long answer to follow.

As soon as I posted that I regretted. The "collapse" part was supposed to be
tongue in check; I don't think anyone is going to have a failure due to the
design under normal circumstances.

We have been over this before but it was awhile ago. The Moose gear could
probably withstand a drop straight down off the top of a building <grin> but
don't screw up and land with a side load too often. Due to the gear leg
being essentially straight all side loads are transferred straight up and
across and are trying to shear the main gear attach bolt off. The bolt is
in single shear. It would be better (and cost more to manufacture) if the
gear leg came up and then bent over horizontal and then you could have the
inner bracket similar to the P. Ponk modification for Cessna's
(http://www.pponk.com/ look under landing gear and then beef up kit and
there is an exploded view).

Murphy made up Jim Moore a complete new set of gear with all 4130 steel
brackets (inner and outer), gear legs bent over a la Cessna and two solid
1/8" aluminum plates across the front and back of the gear box. Last I
emailed Jim he still wasn't back in the air so no report. It weighs a lot
more than the standard setup. He said both his main gear bolt holes were
worn to an oval shape in the inner 6061 brackets. So they have already made
a better set of gear but don't think there is anything wrong with the
current set so are leaving it as is (as far as I know, which isn't much). I
think they will regret that once more time gets put on the fleet but I hope
I am wrong.

The twisting drag loads are another issue. They said it was mostly due to
the large Alaska wheel mod and they put out a bulletin to add the drag brace
behind each outer fitting (I saw that yours has those installed Ted). That
was supposed to fix that but I am not sure how many hours they actually put
on the demonstrator after the fix with the big wheels.

I added longer/bigger drag braces behind each outer gear bracket. I changed
the FUS 310 (which is the lower portion of the outer bracket) to steel and
upped the size of the outer attach bolts. I made a steel U shaped bracket
that goes over the top of the inner gear bracket and gear leg. The gear leg
slips up into this U so the bolt now goes down through the steel, through
the gear leg, then the MAM aluminum bracket and then through the bottom of
my steel U. The U shaped bracket is held in place by side flanges that pick
up the same bolt that hold the main bracket in place. Then there is steel
square tube that runs across the gear box connecting the two gear legs
together to give more side load protection.

Not sure if this will really do anything but I feel better. Once I get some
time on it I will see.

Sorry that was so long.

Scott
