Seat questions

Posted: Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:16 am
by Scott Aldrich
I do not have my seat back cushions on yet. The seat back tin cans every
time you lean on it "bonk - doink", very annoying. I am assuming this goes
away with the cushion in place, or maybe I have the skin too slack??

How is the Velcro that holds the cushions on holding up over time? I am
more concerned about the half on the bottom of the seat itself. Is it
necessary to add something (rivets or glue?) for more holding strength?

Thanks,
Scott
Moose

Scott;
I haven't had any problems with the velcro on my Super Rebel seats.
It sounds like you are really coming along on your Moose. Good for you!

Thanks for the info Larry.

I just got an email from Ted with his itinerary for their flight up to
Alaska this summer. It makes me want to just throw the wings on and get
going.

Any progress on your Moose? I would be hard pressed to get anything done if
I had a flying SR too :)

I assume I have the same seat as you Scott. Mine don't "klunk" or at
least I have never noticed it. I suspect it is because the cushions
dampen any such contact.

The cushions and velcro are holding up very well--like new in
fact--after almost 150 hours. The cushions don't slip or move at
all--there's no play whatsoever in mine.

I had to sew on the velcro that attaches to the cushions. The tape velcro
would not hold. Tape velcro on the metal seat holds just fine though. Just
won't stick to the cushion material very well.

What I found when I rebuilt Bernie D's wreck as well. All his seat cover
velcro was stuck to the alum pan and nothing was left holding it to the
fabric covers.

Hi Scott,
My seats don't bonk but I stretched the aluminum as tight as I could. My
seat cushions wrap around the seat frame and are glued to the seat bottom.
The adhesive was contact cement, coat both sides, let dry and stick
together. No problems in three years.

I have another seat twist - I have a sore butt after a couple hours from the
hard flat seat - has any one put a cloth bottom on rather than the flat AL -
I really think a little dish like seat would be better than the AL. I have
tried cushions but then it becomes like trying to sit on a hump.

G'day from down under Ryan !

Go get yourself some "temperfoam" ..... and pad your seat & back
support with it
It contours itself to your shape when your body heat & weight press
against it .... developed for the space race !

Seat questions

Hi Ryan !

The professional upholsterer who made my Rebel seats (and door
panels, and baggage curtain) said that he would never use aluminum -
for the exact reason you gave ! Also, he felt that drilling all those holes
in the seat frame would weaken it significantly ...

What he does is sew (industrial machine) a full width strip of heavy
canvas into a loop over the seat frame tubes. The seats then fasten to
this and the frame. The same canvas sling was used for the seat backs,
and it makes a very comfortable seat.

We also used different densities of foam - about 3" of firm, 3" of medium,
2" of soft, and 2" of TemperFoam on top, for ultimate comfort ! The Rebel
seats really should be about 10" thick !! This gives a better view, and
prevents your voice from rising 3 octaves when you get out of the Rebel. ;-)
(That metal seatbelt attach bracket .... ;-) :-) )

From my experiences flying the SR/Moose, it is nice to have a 10"
seat for that, too ! Always used the factory seat, plus a cushion, but,
as you say, you need a pretty soft cushion to keep balanced on !! :-)

The seats were made much more comfortable because he cut
triangular wedges of foam and glued them on the sides of the seat bottom
and back, before covering. These give lateral support, much like good
quality automotive seats.

Seat questions

If anyone was at Oshkosh 1995... you would know how my son and I arrived in
mine! We stole the seat cushions off the patio furniture in the back yard
and set them on the bar alum pans...since I hadn't had time to get into
upholsery yet. While their we splurged and bought two 1" thick x 18" square
pieces of Temprafoam to add to the cushions for the 7 1/2 hr ride home (in
one shot I should add!) Didn't get out of the plane even for customs at Gore
Bay. Come to think of it she told us to not even bother shutting the engine
down, but it was too late I had just pulled the mixture! Flew this way for a
good time afterwards as well and believe I finally had the seats done in the
winter of 1997 giving up only two at a time so I could keep flying!! :o)).
