Air riveter
Air riveter
I finally got an air riveter, and used it to rivet a horizontal stab the
other day. I have a few questions about its operation.
1) How do you get a slower pull? I have a hard time modulating the pull
speed. I tried turning down the line pressure to the minimum required to
still pull the rivet, and still can't really slow it down.
2) The mandrels don't eject out the back of the puller head most of the
time. I have to either turn the riveter upside-down and shake it until the
mandrel falls out, or if it sticks in the jaws, then I have to pull it out
the front by hand. This is a real pain. Shouldn't they just eject out the
back? There is a plastic shroud there to catch them.
I got it at Harbor Freight. It's the Central Pneumatic one.
Thanks
Jesse

Air riveter
Jesse..not much you can do about the speed other than putting a flow control
in your air line. I use about 60 psi to pull the RV1410s and 100 to pull the
RV1613/19's. I can feather my trigger somewhat for a bit slower pull, but
not much. Never been an issue.
Pull the nose cover off the riveter. One of the wrenches that came with the
unit should have a gauge that is used to set the nose distance. Don't worry
if you don't have it..never works right anyhow. If mandrels aren't falling
out and the nose piece itself isn't too tight...Loosen the jam nut on the
nose piece and move the jaw assembly forward 1/2 a turn. Tighten the jam
nut, put the nose cover back on and give it a try.

Air riveter
Thanks Wayne,
I'll give the jaw adjustment a try. I think I have a flow control valve. I
can adjust the line pressure. Is that the same? I was using about the same
psi you said for the different rivet sizes. It seems to work fine with a
fast pull, I was thinking ahead to the Proseal though. I can use my
Rive-drill for that though. It will go as slow as you want.

Air riveter
Pressure is one thing, flow is another. Pressure is psi in the line, flow is
restricted with a needle valve or similar. If you have a gate valve on your
compressor tanks line feed you may be able to just crack it when you want a
slower pull. Others have just used 20 or 30 psi to "half" pull the rivets
when doing proseal and then turned up to the normal 60 or so to finish the
pull and break the mandrels. I've never bothered buying into this half pull
/ full pull theory myself.

Wayne,
OK, as per usual I remain thick-headed but I can't figure the point of slow
or half pulling proseal rivets vs, avex? If enough black goo is inside and
out I can't think a rivet would shove proseal out of the way any more than
chromate.

Air riveter
Hello John
I have much less experience than Wayne but if you want to be sure that in
the proseal area the 2 parts have the "time" to squeeze out the the over of
proseal, just use a hand riveter and go slowly. There is not a big
quantity of rivets involve, and you don't fill you air riveter with a very
but very stiky "air tool grease"

Air riveter
You guys all missed my view on that (even #1 son...can tell he's run away
every time the puppy $hit comes out LOL)!
I >>DO NOT<< slow pull or 1/2 pull rivets when doing a fuel tank while
playing with proseal and why I stated "I've never bothered buying into this
half pull / full pull theory myself". I do set the gun a little lower in
pressure when pulling the tank Rivets RR640x as they will split open if
pulled too hard. 45 to 50 psi does the trick and the cleco's you have
holding the assembly together will have oozed the proseal as far as it needs
to be compressed. Pull the darn rivets and then take a Popsicle stick and go
around and fillet the small bit more the proseal oozes out.

Air riveter
Thanks Jean & Daryl,
More points to ponder and techniques to remember. The learning curve on
these things is pretty steep for a mental junk pile that is already way too
full and slowing down by the day.

I have much less experience than Wayne but if you want to be sure that in
the proseal area the 2 parts have the "time" to squeeze out the the over of
proseal, just use a hand riveter and go slowly. There is not a big
quantity of rivets involve, and you don't fill you air riveter with a very
but very stiky "air tool grease"

restricted with a needle valve or similar. If you have a gate valve on
your
compressor tanks line feed you may be able to just crack it when you want
a
slower pull. Others have just used 20 or 30 psi to "half" pull the rivets
when doing proseal and then turned up to the normal 60 or so to finish the
pull and break the mandrels. I've never bothered buying into this half
pull
/ full pull theory myself.

You guys all missed my view on that (even #1 son...can tell he's run away
every time the puppy $hit comes out LOL)!
I >>DO NOT<< slow pull or 1/2 pull rivets when doing a fuel tank while
playing with proseal and why I stated "I've never bothered buying into
this
half pull / full pull theory myself". I do set the gun a little lower in
pressure when pulling the tank Rivets RR640x as they will split open if
pulled too hard. 45 to 50 psi does the trick and the cleco's you have
holding the assembly together will have oozed the proseal as far as it
needs
to be compressed. Pull the darn rivets and then take a Popsicle stick and
go
around and fillet the small bit more the proseal oozes out.
