hi all

i am doing my wiring diagram now and can wire nav strobe lights two ways

1. 1 switch for both, switch goes off-strobes-nav, trouble is cant run nav
lights without strobes on, is this a problem

2. 2 switches , one for strobes on-off and one for nav lights on-off

any suggestions as to which is a better way to wire these

Hi Mike !

I would go with #2 - it is strongly recommended to turn strobes
off if in cloud, which could happen at night .... ;-^)

In any case, 2 switches would give more flexibility, in case of
electrical problems.

Mike,

There will be time you don't want the strobes on but need the navs on. I
wouldn't wire it with one switch unless you could reverse the order so nav
on before strobes.

If you are talking the white high intensity strobes, generally guys leave
these off on the ramp at night to not drive everyone blind and only turn on
when taking the active. There will also be times when you want to turn them
off in the air when the flash is bouncing off haze/clouds and driving you
crazy.

For me it is two switches. (or three if you have a rotating beacon)

Have two switches. You may want to turn the strobes off on the ground to
avoid blinding people, and it's advisable to turn them off when flying in
cloud, snow at night, etc.

Hi Mike

I've copied an idea from work...

I'm planning on a single 3 position switch, centre (center :-) ) off, down
Nav only, up Nav and strobe together.

That will save a bit of panel space, although still use 2 CB's for the
cct's.

Yes, true, and the FAA wants us to turn it on before aircraft movement
and/or engine start.

Probably not a lot of them on homebuilt since they are not "required" and
cost money..

Interesting to note in Canada you are not to turn the strobes on until
line up checks - par of the CAR's. Nav's on and beacons on with engine
startup.
