static pressure

Hello:
This issue probably has been beeten to death before but after 100 hrs. I
finnally disconnected my static line from the pitot tube to find that I
now get a correct reading on my airspeed indicator with the line open to
the cockpit. I feel that I should however connect the static line to the
outside by putting in a rivet, drilling it out and sealing the line to
it. Where should I drill the rivet for this? Van's puts one on each side
too equalize the pressure.
Thanks
Murray
