Float pumps

Does any one have a good lead on a drill attachment for a float pump?
I'd like to find a motorized version of this plastic work horse that is
wearing me out. It is only a problem if I leave the plane in the lake
for a few days - but it sure would be nice to have a faster easier
system

Randy, How close are you guys to "leak testing" those fancy floats? I
suspect your water is solid right now too.

The airplane should see some flight testing by early April. Water testing won't be till the ice goes out in May. Getting closer every day.

the pump that works best for me was a shop vac. If you have the power there
for the drill anyway. my shop vac has the drain in the bottom so I don't
even have to dump it out,
it will suck 10 gal. of water in 25 seconds. It's great for getting the
sand and dirt out of the inside too.

I just ran into a light weight portable item that might be suitable as a
float pump. I bought a battery powered kerosene pump for $10. It's long and
skinny, designed to fit through the opening of a 5 gal can of kerosene and
reach the bottom. Not terribly fast, probably a couple of gallons a minute.
I can take a pic if anyones interested.

Float pumps

Can this pump be used to pump gasoline? When I am out at the lake in the summer, I usually have 5 or 6 cans of gas on hand for the boats, or my plane if I have been giving too many rides. But to get fuel into the wing of a docked floatplane isn't always that easy. What I use today is a little hand pump that goes into my gas can on the dock, and pushes the fuel up to the wing. It works, but is slow and cumbersome. If there is a cheap electrical one, I might be interested.

For the float compartments, I just use a small lightweight hand pump that works fine for me. Two quick pumps on each hole just to ensure no leaks, is all that I need, usually. An electrical one wouldn't help me there. I sometimes get a few cupfuls out of the front compartments after being in rough water, as I still haven't sealed off my front wheel well hydraulic hose grommets, but that's it.

Float pumps

Now there's an idea Mike.....put a facet pump in each float... with an
intake hose curled up inside..a line up the front mounting strut...in thru
the cabin and tee'd into the fuel line with a check valve. Set gas cans on
float, stick intake hose in and pump away! Might need to hand prop when
you're done though...since the battery will be dead by then. Also remember
there's probably air in the gascolator now!

Cheers,
Wayne

Float pumps

No, but it's a thought. The ones I know are about 30 gph which would take about 15 minutes per gas can, so probably not fast enough for what I would want. I think my hand pump is faster than that. I have not looked for an electric one yet, but maybe there are some, at a reasonable cost that would work.

Float pumps

by Mike Davis
I've seen a lot of folks use these small pumps with model airplanes to pump
from their gas can into the airplane... most use the little 14 amp batteries
and can go a month between charges flying every weekend. They are also
common on ultralight aircraft to pump from a seat mounted tank to the main
tank... most 2 stroke lighting coils are only 80 - 100 watts, and they
handle them just fine.

Cheers,
Wayne

Sorry, not for gasoline... big warning on the package. Have you looked
at
a
12v faucett pump?

plane
if I have been giving too many rides. But to get fuel into the wing of a
docked floatplane isn't always that easy. What I use today is a little
hand
pump that goes into my gas can on the dock, and pushes the fuel up to the
wing. It works, but is slow and cumbersome. If there is a cheap
electrical
one, I might be interested.

-> For the float compartments, I just use a small lightweight hand pump
that
works fine for me. Two quick pumps on each hole just to ensure no leaks,
is
all that I need, usually. An electrical one wouldn't help me there. I
sometimes get a few cupfuls out of the front compartments after being in
rough water, as I still haven't sealed off my front wheel well hydraulic
hose
grommets, but that's it.
