Engine thrust lines ?

Hi All

I've been asked if anyone knows the thrust line position for a Lycoming on a
Rebel/Elite firewall on the vertical ?

What I'm trying to say is how far down from the top of the firewall is the
imaginary spot that the engine thrust line pulls through. I appreciate there
is an offset on the horizontal, but if the back of the crankshaft flew off
how far down the firewall would it leave a dent ?? (hoping of course that
never happens :-) )

I also suppose it's the same for 0-235 and 0-320 but not sure on that.

This is to help resolve a possible visibility and prop clearance problem in
mounting the WAM 120 and 160 diesels on aircraft over here in England.

Any suggestions and rough ideas would be great.

Still working on the FUS here.

Thanks Nigel

PS...I haven't drilled my finger to #30 yet, but I have dremeled my nose
open a few weeks ago (don't ask!)

Nigel...original O-235 thrust line was 19 inches up from the bottom (outside
surface) of the square tubes of the carry thru and prop flange was located
at 51.25" forward of the front face of the vertical door post tube.

Your Elite would have the 3" firewall back mod already in place so this
would make that distance 48.25". The vertical 19" number has changed upward
an inch or so on some of the dynafocal mounts..but this at least puts you in
the ball park.

Cheers,
Wayne

And 1 degree offset to the right for the prop flange location taken over the
distance from the firewall to the flange (of course from center at the
firewall).

Engine thrust lines ?

by WALTER KLATT
Without doing the mearsurements, I don't know the exact position of my current 0320 installaion. However, I do know that my first conical mount that I received from MAM did not fit right with the new (at that time) speed cowl, so I hauled my engine down to the factory and they built a new mount and a new cowl for me. I do remember though that the new mount put the engine thrust line up a full 1 1/2 inches higher than the first mount.

Now this was all done about 10 years ago, and I don't know if my mount is the same as what MAM sells today or not. Again, this is a conical mount, not dynafocal. I know the cowls are definitely different now, although I think they probably have about 4 or more versions of those.

So it may well be that mine is unique. I think Grant, when he was still there, was trying to figure that out once, but then left before I heard back. We did find an old mould that corresponded to my cowl, but don't think it is used anymore, and might be gone now.

I already posted the thrust line measurements Gilles. As I said 19" up from
the bottom surface of the square carrythru tubes. This was the position of
the O-235 on the conical mount. The dynafocal mount is 1" to 1 1/2" higher
than this... so anywhere between 19" and 20 1/2" is your target!
