Yes, it happened... and with only a little over 100 hours of building. I
drilled a perfect #40 hole in my left index finger! While on a trip to
Seattle a few years back, the wife of another builder on the list related a
story to my wife about why she doesn't help build anymore. I don't remember
why she doesn't help anymore... but I do remember that she insisted it
wasn't because her husband had drilled a hole in one of her fingers. Well
I'll tell you something... if I hadn't been operating the drill myself, I
wouldn't be to keen to help out the idiot who was any time soon!
Fortunately I was working alone, so I didn't offend anybody with my
reaction. ;-)

Just hope while it was still hurting like $((#*%%(#()_)^#%) you dug around
and removed all the alum chips! Better now than later. I've had pieces work
their way to the surface a year or more after the fact and it isn't pretty
digging them out then!

I had a "friend" drill one in mine too - while helping do the stringers
on the wings .... :o(
(took about 4 years to "grow out" the blemish under the nail)

Well I've sure enjoyed reading all the responses... I knew I wasn't the only
one! ;-) I'm sure glad I had a drill stop on mine, so it only went in about
1/8" or so... clean through the thumb with a #30??? OUCH! I knew the best
medicine for it had to be a good laugh. Got my first good laugh when I told
my wife what I'd done... thought she was going into convulsions. Prompted
me to provide more details... you know, how the flutes on the drill bit
expelled the bits of flesh as the sharp tip cut them loose. ;-) I thought I
was going to die when she ran out of the room covering her ears!

And as Wayne mentioned, I endured a close inspection looking for aluminum
chips, I've had foreign objects under my skin before... man did that thing
bleed.

If you look closely at the hands of anyone who's built a plane, or
two, or even worked with tools for a while, you'll note that the skin
is mostly scar tissue, connected by other bits of scar tissue. I've
amused my kids a bit, by showing this attribute of living a life of a
devout "Tool User". Rarely fatal and largely rewarding.
