Hi,

the mention of fokm's floats being located a bit forward of normal prompted a question.
does she have any tendency to porpoise? would the forward location increase or decrease this tendency? our christavia porpoises some when step taxiing, none on takeoff or landing.
curious if we may have missed the sweet spot on the installation, or if this combo with the 1800 amphis is just going to do a bit. i am getting used to it and working on my technique to dampen the motion. the water around here is hard enough now that it is not a problem.

Pretty "hard" up here as well Andy. Started the morning at -32*C and wind
chill of -40*C/F and then some.

Can't help with your porpoise issue. Don't have enough water experience to
comment, other than I never noticed it with FOKM and don't think Gary got it
into the water before taking the floats off for the winter.

Do you know where the step on the Christavia is in relation to your datum.
I installed 1650 edo's on mine with an 0-235-C1 and had no problem with
porpoising. Was hard to round out onto the step with gross of 1650+ and no
wind. May be able to find my measurements if yr interested in tinkering
with yours. Sounds like yrs may have been to far forward. Mine was a bit
nose heavy but never had that problem.

I found the sweet spot on my floats to be smaller than the few other planes
I've flown on edos. Never really had any problems with it porpoising
though. Maybe just try taxiing 3'off the water :)

I agree, the sweet spot is somewhat narrow with my 1800 amphibs, and took a while to nail in my early days, but am much better now. However, no porpoising with mine either. I have flown other planes on floats that definitely were easier to porpoise, and it was difficult/dangerous to fast taxi. Also, what I like is that they are easy to land, and don't have a tendency to bounce up again like my last floatplane. I have come down pretty solid a few times on the water, and they just stayed there. And they don't dig in either on the nose when landing fast or on glassy water, again like my last plane used to do. Maybe a lot has to do with where you position the c of g and angle of incidence. In my case, the c of g ended up exactly the same when I went from wheels to floats.

So, I very much like how the 1800 amphibs behave on the Rebel.

Thanks for all the thoughts on float location.
our floats are located with the step 3" aft of the
mid cord line of the wing, i think. going from
memory which is not so good. may have been a 45% thing in that
calculation. we compromised between the rebel
dimensions and a local super-cub on whipaire amphibs.
as i said, we get off fine and it is easy to land, I'm
just not great at step taxiing.

we have only flown sol so far, but we have added
v.g.s and reduced power on stalls to 43 mph and power off to 46mph.
speeds are from a gps and corresponded well to the airspeed ind.
we have no flaps. these speeds dropped about 4mph each when we added the v.g.s.

it takes 13 strokes on the pump for up or down.
does that sound about normal.

Depends on the night and the "preflight" for me....strokes required not
always the same! LOL

Seriously..FOKM was around 18 pumps so you're getting less exercise than
most at 13 strokes!
