Dynon Instrument

Has anyone used the Dynon multi-function instrument to make the Rebel or
others legal for night flight? Any experience with it?

Dynon Instrument

Post by Rebflyer » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:02 am

Hi Gary,
I do know a couple of RV's, and Longez's that have this instrument, and
as of right now they are grumbling about them having the " leans". The
horizon is not level and it reads 10-20 deg off on the bearing. The company is well
aware of the problem, and I think they have come up with a fix. They have
also had some interference with the radio signals too, but the new ones are
fixed on that point.
Have you looked at the Blue Mountain stuff? A bit more in price, but they
have an internal gps and they are approving it for IFR here in the states. I
don't know about your nighttime stuff and what's required.
One other thought, the Dynon display might be getting a bit far away for
old eyes in a Rebel. The Blue Mountain is easier to read in that manner. Our
panels are further away than a RV or EZ. IMHO Curt N97MR

Garry,

I have a friend who flies a Kitfox with the Dynon and he loves it. I would
have bought one myself if where available at the time. Saves wight and space
too.

A genearal question about night flying.

Does the Dynon alone qualify for required instraments or do you require a
combination for night flying? I'm sure I used to know what was required.

Thanks,

Brad (R195)

Dynon Instrument

I don't think you need any more instruments for night flight as you do for
day VFR. What you need are NAV lights and a strobe. I flew my Luscombe at
night all the time and it was VERY minimally instrumented. It didn't even
have a strobe - built before 1957 so not required, but a new airplane would
need one..

Dynon Instrument

Post by Garry Wright » Sat Feb 18, 2012 10:02 am

In Canada, the instrument complement of the Dynon is sufficient to do
the job. To my knowledge there is no declaration of any sort that
defines this. It might be a bit dodgy to rely on it entirely but I
suppose that depends on the kind of night flying you plan to do.

In Canada it is a requirement from CARS604 that you have a heading
indicator and either a turn/bank or attitude instrument for night
flight.
