Hi!

After reading the rebel mails for a few weeks I think it is time to introduce myself.
My name is Dieter Oberbichler, I live in Austria( nooooooooo kang....) and I am waiting for my tailkit s/n 778R to arrive in Europe to get started.
I have never seen a Rebel in "natura", only read an article in a German magazine a few years ago and searched the www. What I've read and the information and enthusiasm discovered in this list confirmed me to build a Rebel and I really hope you have builders meetings in the summertime too. We will spend our holidays in Ontario ( My wife is Canadian and the "official" builder as we would like to get a C-reg for 778R ) and I would like to meet some of you and your Rebels in person.

Hi Dieter !

Welcome to the group !! You've made a great choice of airplanes !! ;-)

We have the meetings every second month, and the odd builder visit
in between, but the July meeting is replaced by the Rebel Ramble, a fly 'n
camp trip to various places. In '03, the Ramble went to both coasts,
right across Canada - it will likely be a smaller on for '05, up north to
James Bay, then down to Ottawa, for the aviation museum, then on
to Quebec City, for a few days in our "old world city". The last
builders meeting before summer is Saturday, May 7th, but there might
be a fly-in builder visit in June ( if we can twist Jim's ...(ummm....errr...)
<find> a volunteer again ! ;-) :-) )

If you are going to be anywhere near Brampton (about 40 km. NW
of Toronto), by all means give us a call or drop a note. If we're in the
province, we can try to meet up, show you a few Rebels, and meet a
few builders - and try to squeeze in a flight ! You can catch us at:

Congratulations Dieter,

Have you figured out how to build with a 'C' overseas? You know about
the Canadian citizen bit obviously.
Did that have anything to do with hooking up with a Canuck? That's a
first, usually it's the Green card that's the draw.
I'm building mine in Dubai with Transport Canada approval.
Basically, if there is a bilateral agreement then the local authorities
represent TC.
In my case there wasn't so I got TC approval for a Canadian AME (my
drinking buddy) to watch over me.
On first entry to Canada, TC will inspect, however they don't care if
you fly it overseas subject to local approval.
Things may have changed with the RCA taking over since I got approval a
long time ago in 1997.
(should have listened to BobP) ;-)
Are you anywhere near Vienna? Could maybe drop in some time.

Hi Dieter - welcome to the Murphy familly. Austria is one of my
favourite countries - very beautiful with great people. Where are you
located?
As Bob said if you get to Ontario in June or July you're welcome to
visit the hangar any time (an hour north of Toronto) and yes I do hope
to have the builders 'fly-in' again on the first or second weekend in
June - depending on any scheduling conflicts.

You could also build and ship everything short of close up. ;-)
Tried to build my new shop today but it's pouring and you can't plane or
stain wood when it's wet.
Go figure, it never rains over here unless I need to build something
outside. (could be snowing I guess)

When I contacted MD-RA for information about registration of a foreign built
aircraft in Canada(we want to move over/back within the next 5 to 8 years),
they actually suggested that my wife as a Canadian citizen should be the
"official" builder . So now I have to deal with the Austrian Authorities as
well as with the Canadians :-( ....
Just to compare: When contacting MD-RA for information I got all relevant
data as pdf and the suggestion above, the Austrian answer was : Can do
nothing without writen application......
anyways if eyerthing works out the Austrian inspector will work as a
representate for MD-RA during the building process.

I would be tempted to do that anyway since it guarantees no problems and
most of us don't build quite as fast as we originally envisioned! I had
the entire airframe inspected all at once before permanently closing
anything. Biggest obstacle is that you shouldn't close the fuel tank
tops although you could probably get away with that... It saved a few
dollars and allowed access for upgrades/mods that occurred during my
extended build. Putting the rivets in the wing tops and interior floor
is very quick after the Canadian pre-close inspection.

and considering the time needed to pull al those rivets and my time to spare
for building :
