I'm fairly new to this group and I was wondering if it would be a good
idea to have a list on the DCSOL site somewhere with all the members
name, email, city, and what they are building or have built. I don't
know if this is asking alot not knowing how large this group is, but I'm
starting to get notice some regular names on the list.
Also, Mike, I sent you a check to help support your site expenses, let
me know if you don't get it in a week or two.

There is one problem with having such a list easily available: If
spammers get hold of it, everyone will regret that the list is made
available. I get far too much spam as it is now.

No problem with me. My ISP gives me a spam filter option, and it
works very, very well, almost zero spam. The only spam that gets
through is the occasional Nigerian money scammer, or a Viagra
offer, but even those are rare.

I agree with the problem of spam, but if we put it inside the archive site
automated spiders can't get to it... you'll have to log in to view it. But
also as already pointed out, this information is already available on
Murphy's web site... and publically accessable to those wonderful spam
spiders!

Yes it will be a good idea to have a builder directory ... but I think it is
a bit akward to ask more, you already do so much! There is a builder
directory on the mam web site... I don't know if it is up to date.

Well the other side of it is that I have no desire to be on any list
anywhere ;) This list copies everyone on it and it is very simple to
get my e-mail off of one of my posts if someone wants to go private. I
will add 119R to the end of my posts if that helps.
Sooner or later someone always decides to do me a FAVOR and copies the
list to somewhere else!

Several months ago when I was in the early stages of making a kit decision, I looked at the MAM builders list to find names of builders with in a couple states radius of me. I emailed about 20 names and got 1 response. The rest were invalid email addresses.

If the site area was set up for self service, then it would be
kept up to date by the builders, and they can choose if and what
info they want to make available. I think that is the problem
with MAM's site, as it requires too much work to maintain.

That serial number thing at the end of a post isn't a bad idea. Matter of fact if we had a list with maybe the builders name and serial number and maybe even city, that would be sufficient. Like you say the email address is available in the posts for a private message.

I've asked MAM three times to update my email in the builders directory but
it never happened - last time was yesterday. I just tried to check and I
can't get to the page right now so maybe they are updating it..

I've found a pretty slick solution that I'm testing right now... I would
imagine that I'll have it up for everybody to look at in the next day or
two. I've got it functioning already, but it's wide open... I want to
incorporate it into the archive web site so that it can't be accessed
without logging in. It's got its own security, but I want to set it up so
that you don't have to create an account unless you wish to add your
information... I want anybody who is logged into the archive site to them be
able to view these entries without having to first create an account.

That serial number thing at the end of a post isn't a bad idea. Matter of
fact if we had a list with maybe the builders name and serial number and
maybe even city, that would be sufficient. Like you say the email address is
available in the posts for a private message.
