Rear Spar Upgrade

Well another work session and another question. (it does feel good to
be moving forward) The missing rivets and a couple of the mods arrived
on the 24th thanks to Nancy and FedEx.

The Moose upgrade for the rear spar of the 2500 provides a long doubler
from the root end and the manual says to use the provided 1512 rivets to
secure it. The old manual calls for 'Tank Rivets" up to the 3rd rib -
but there are no new tank rivets for the same area - just the reference
to using the 1512's.
Are there ' Tank Rivets' I should use or should I go ahead and use the
1512's and be careful to proseal around the heads????????

Wayne the proseal has worked fine!

Hi Jim! Glad to hear the Proseal's still good! Kinda figured it would be.

As for the rivets...I don't know if the 1512's where spec'd out for the
strength or the fact that MAM figured you'd bugger up the holes drilling out
the existing 1/8" tank rivets. Since you're building new this wouldn't be an
issue (and out of the MANY thousands of rivets I've drilled out less than a
handful have needed a larger rivet). I would contact Robin and ask him if
the rivets are 1512's for a real reason or if you can just use the 1/8"
tank rivets...or maybe now that Brian G. is on the other side of things now
he will offer the answer to that... since he was personally involved in the
upgrades.

Unfortunately Wayne I've already drilled out the holes so it needs to be
the 1512's or the tank rivet equivalent.
You're right though it would have been a good idea.

Jim - I used solid rivets since I had just finished the main spar and was
having fun with it - Remember Wayne's advice to keep the smooth heads on the
inside of the tank -

That's a good idea Brent. I don't think there would be any down side to
solid rivets.
I can also continue without waiting.

Jim - It was a little more difficult for me along the top line since they
are close that top flange that angles back - My squeezer wouldn't go there
and I couldn't get the bucking bar I had in close enough -

Another benefit of the solid is if you put the head on the tank inside - I
think that the tails look better than the pulled ones do. I put the heads on
the outside on the remainder of the rear spar because they are a little
easier to clean around??

Rear Spar Upgrade

Jim - In case you didn't notice Wayne's suggestion to put two nut-plates on
the back of each hinge (If you didn't, the string is in the archives)- The
nut-plates with two rivets on one ear - Use them in the tank (I used them at
each control surface hinge - so you can tighten your hinge brackets up (or
inspect) without getting inside the tank/wing. It is a little tough to get
the wrench on them up by the top hinge bolt but do-able.
