SAFETY ALERT SR/Moose Quick Build

Post by Brent Blue » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:54 am

All:

For those of you who have a Moose or Super Rebel quick build, do not rivet
the intact leading edges of the ailerons and flaps without fully opening
the skins.

Since in the US, we do not have to have open inspections, I did not remove
the external temporary rivets on the skin until I riveted the whole leader
edge skin of these four pieces. I did, of course, replace the external
temporary rivets with permanent rivets and removed the center cover to
assemble the center hinge point.

The big problem is that the folks in the Philippines decided to use
sometimes one or two temporary rivets and sometimes a cleco to attache the
all the ribs to the spars (not just the center ones where the center hinge
bushing is installed). I didn't check this since I could not fathom that
they would fully rivet the aft ribs to the skin without having permanent
rivets in the spar to hold the ribs.

This obviously is a major safety issue if someone starts flying and the
ribs are not secured to the spar properly. I have discussed this with
Robin at MAM and he is talking to Darryl about it to see what to do. By
the way, in addition, on the ailerons, there was a temporary riveted double
at the middle hinge point but this was left out on the flaps which MAM is
now charging me to replace (another source of irritation). There seems to
be no rhyme or reason to what is riveted permanently and what is not.

Although I am a first time builder (and I suspect most quick build folks
are), I would be interested in hearing if I am the only dingbat who didn't
check this out given full riveted aft skin and no quick build
documentation. I can't tell you the amount of wasted time, frustration,
and dealing with oversized drilled out rivet holes this has caused.

Brent

SAFETY ALERT SR/Moose Quick Build

Ah Brent, I feel for you... and it makes me so happy that I'm building from
a kit. There'll be no questions when I'm done with mine!

SAFETY ALERT SR/Moose Quick Build

Post by steveh » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:54 am

Brent and All:

We had the same problem and talked with MAM about putting a notice with the
quick build kits. We learned that if you see ANY temp rivets any place that
you drill them out and LOOK under the skins to make sure that EVERYTHING has
been riveted the way it should be.

Could be a VERY interesting situation once your in the air.

YOU MUST INSPECT ANY AREA THAT HAS ANY TEMP RIVETS PUT IN FOR COMPLETION! ! !

It was suprising what we found when looking inside some of the areas.

KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN! !

SAFETY ALERT SR/Moose Quick Build

Brent,
I'm amazed that Murphy turns such a cold shoulder to their current
customers. IMO this sounds like they have delivered a botched product, which
although can be fixed, is leaving the customer with all the time, money,
oversized holes and frustration of the fix, PLUS the serious risk to others
of not finding the problem. If you go to Murphy's web site right now, you
just see big news about new orders. I would think the least they could do is
make a rather urgent effort to contact Moose customers about the problem, and
then make genuine effort to help take care of it. (Their past line that this
is an educational process doesn't cut it.) They should be grateful to you
for helping them discover a problem they are responsible for! I think word
of such poor handling must hurt Murphy over the long run, more than they
realize. OK, crap, maybe I'm off their Xmas card list now.
