Hi;

I would like to thank those members of the List who share their =
problems and successes with those of us still building. Rebel 171 is =
Slowly beginning to look like an airplane. I have reached the point =
where I am installing the control systems, mounting the MATCO brakes and =
trying to figure out how I will beef up the FUS-30 tail wrap area. I =
have ordered an extra FUS-30 so that I can beef that area up. I would =
like to know exactly where and how the tail sections are buckling etc. =
Does anyone have pictures of their repairs? I'm seriously thinking of =
attending the Sept. 19 meeting in Brampton to eyeball a Rebel that has =
been repaired in the tail section. Are there any Rebels in the Brampton =
area that have been repaired in the FUS-30 area? It's about 570 miles =
to Brampton from Northern Virginia. Would it be worth my time to make =
the trip? I could fly but the car would be faster and more comfortable =
then the Piper Cub.

Am I making a mistake in installing the MATCO brakes and wheels? Should =
I bite the bullet and order Murphys new brakes or maybe Clevelands?

I,ve starting looking for an O-320 and instruments. If anyone has any =
leads I would appreciate hearing about them.

We'd love to have you visit for the September Builders Meeting !! It IS
a long drive - flying would be more fun - if you've got time to spare
(weather being a bit unpredictable at this time of year).

What is FUS-30 (loaned my manual :-( ) ??? I thought the very back
bottom section of the fuse cone was FUS-49 ... This is the area that is
usually doubled. Not all of the section needs to be doubled, just the part
from the rudder post to an inch or so in front of the tailspring attach
fitting, and up to the stabilizer at the rear, but some have just put
on two FUS-49's, spreading lots of epoxy chromate in between, and rivetting
together wet.

I can try to dig up photos of the buckling - it is usually a vertical
crease, parallel to the rudder post, an inch or 2 ahead of the rudder post,
but can also appear at the bottom, running forward. There are a few nearby
that have been repaired, and several that have doublers.

Murphy got tired of being the QC dept. for Matco - if you have the
SILVER wheels, these brakes are OK - not great, but useable (just check to
see that BOTH your axles are the SAME diameter !!!). Angus McKenzie just
replaced his silver Matco's - I think the disk clips were cracked, after
only about 30 hours. If you have the GOLD wheels & Matco brakes, THROW THEM
AWAY *NOW* !! These are only suitable for ultra-light versions of the Rebel,
and, even then, braking action is mostly wishful thinking ! They will not
hold a 912 above 3,000 rpm (less than half power) !

Forget Clevelands - they're not worth the big difference in cost ! The
new Murphy wheel & brakes are (IMHO) *at least* as good as Clevelands, and
were even designed so you could use the Cleveland pads in a pinch (if you
didn't mind paying a bunch extra !!). The Murphy brakes are plenty good
enough to stand a Rebel on its nose (there are lots of examples around !)

Doug Reid recently bought an overhauled O-320 from Michigan (?) for
a good price - he is often at the builders meetings, so you could ask for
the name of the shop. They apparently have a reasonable reputation &
warranty. (I think the price was in the $10,000 - 12,000 range ...)

If you want one built up, John Donaldson, of Aviation Technical
Consultants,
up here in Orillia, will do that for you. He was the shop foreman at
Canadian Aero Engines (the guys who supplied over 30 engines for Rebels).
His phone number is: (705) 325-5515 John will find a core if you don't
have one, and rebuild it to your specs. (He has built O-320's with 180 HP
!!)
John gave an informative talk at a Rebel Builders meeting a couple of years
ago ...

Salvair/Trimair or Doug Ronen Aircraft Parts are good local sources for
used instruments - typically about 1/2 of new price for tagged instruments.
Will try to dig out phone numbers for the meeting.... For a simple
panel mount comm. radio, the VAL is hard to beat ! Many of them here, as
they are less expensive than hand-helds, and offer a good display, with
flip-flop !
