Moose, Safety For Outboard End Bolt Aileron Torque Tube
Posted: Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:46 am
Hi Guys,
FIRST FOR MIKE:
Mike, I just posted two pictures to Maddog (Safety For Outboard End of
Aileron Torque Tube) the first was by mistake and is a large file. When you
get a minute you can delete it and keep the sized file with the .jpg
designation. Thanks.
Randy and I were not comfortable without a safety on the bolt at the
outboard end of the aileron torque tube. I emailed MAM and asked about a
safety for the bolt and the need for a CC-54 (tube ring) on the inboard end
of the torque tube.
Robin's response:
jog in it would be required etc. While thinking of how to fabricate such a
bar the idea of using an Adel Clamp came to mind. And that is what I used. I
just happen to have some #31's (31/16) on hand, a perfect tight fit for the
two inch torque tube. A small tab bolted on with the Adel Clamp and I was in
business. Oh, and a little one handed dexterity and a few #^%$*%^)^&_
working through the inspection hole. We used a AN4H-14A end bolt. The
picture posted to maddog shows all.
We also added a delrin washer/spacer we fabricated to take up the end play
created by the AIL-26 bushing and an installation per the manual. It slides
over the bushing. An added benefit of having the spacer is that a normal
bolt head will clear the support bracket. As you will see in the picture we
also used a castle nut and cotter pin on the rod end bolt. I know a nylock
nut is fine. We just like that irrational "feel good" thing when it comes to
critical nuts.
Another dragon slayed ,
Don B.

Because of the CC-54 already installed on the end of our tube, a bar with aThe CC-54 is not needed on either end of the torque tube.
It should be removed from the manual.
The AN4-13A bolt in the end of the torque tube is held tight by the
anchor nut and possibly lock tite.
It should probably have a drilled head and safety wired to a
.125 thick X 1/2" or 3/4" wide aluminum bar riveted longitudinally to
the torque tube and protruding past the end of the torque tube.
