McCauley Prop/Spacer "adjustment"

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:40 am

Clay, take the spacer that comes with the prop to someone with a lathe or
milling machine and cut it down, on the forward face, to the thickness you
need. Generally you can take them down to almost 3/4" thick and still have a
distinct bushing hole and still retain the reduced diameter bolt holes. The
dowel pin holes go all the way thru, so just knock them out..machine the
spacer and reinstall the pins.

I found a McCauley prop DTM 75 X 57at a good price and was prepared to
buy it for my 0320 until I found out that it won't fit without a
standard 3 1/2 spacer (used on many Cessna 172s). I'd rather not have
to use a spacer of that size with my nosebowl / metal cowl. Would
something like a 1 " spacer with the dowel pins be available?

Thanks for any help.

Clay

McCauley Prop/Spacer "adjustment"

Post by Clay Smith » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:40 am

Hi Wayne, thanks for your response. That's a good suggestion. I'll have to
see if the guy still has the spacer. I know that he pulled his 160 hp out
of his 172 and installed a 180 hp so he might have used the spacer on the
new engine. Do all McCauley props require this spacer to fit on 0320s?

Thanks again

McCauley Prop/Spacer "adjustment"

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:40 am

No they don't. Problem is though, most props that have been sold with
spacers are not counterbored for the prop flange bushings.....since these
are in the spacer and have no need in the propellor.

Two options of course. One is to use a spacer and the other would be to have
someone counter bore the prop holes for you to 5/8" diameter so you can bolt
it directly to the prop flange... if you can go without a spacer at all.

He wouldn't have used the spacer as the 180Hp x O-360 uses 1/2" prop bolts
and has 3/4" counterbores. The only thing you need to watch though is that
if the prop came of an O-320-E2D it's going to have 7/16 prop bolt holes vs
the majority of O-320's that use 3/8. If the prop is cheap enough would be
worth tracking down a set of 7/16 flange bushings... if yours are 3/8. They
run about $30 US each new and I have always been able to get my engine shops
to trade them for free, for me, if they have a set around.

McCauley Prop/Spacer "adjustment"

Post by Wayne G. O'Shea » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:40 am

Should add for safety...if you get someone to counter bore the holes into
the prop. Make sure they know how to chamfer the bottom of the bore so no
stress risers!
