Sorry to hear you had problems, Bill. I hear this is fairly common with
chrome bores - but a hone job sometimes lets you try again, and often
succeeds .....

There have been problems with the Cermichrome process, too, but it
seems like a better way to go ... The Nikasil cylinders on the 912
work GREAT !

Now that the 100 HP. 912-S is available, it might be a reasonable
choice .... We've certainly been a lot of places with the old 912,
lugging a lot of gear ! :-)

London's only about 90 miles away !! Small world !!! One of these
years, I'd like to get out to California - we've been to Florida often,
and the west coast of Canada, and I've flown a Rebel up to Kuujuaq, near
the Arctic, but have never had a chance to visit the south-west - maybe
one day !!

Hope honing the cylinders will do the trick !

Bill & Bob
In regards to your comments and problems with oil consumption. I have used
chrome cyls. on

L-0360 engs. and overhauled several engs. using re-chromed or just honed and
etched barrels.

Not to be confused with "cermichrome" cyls. I have found the best way to
break in new cyls.

was to run the eng. hard, that is, high man. press. and high rpm from the
very start. I

have even gone so far as to start the eng at the end of the runway and take
off

immeadiately. Of course a short run after eng. installation to check for oil
leaks is

nessary but at all costs avoid ideling or low power settings in the air. I
try to run a new

eng. for 2-3 hrs. on the first flight.

I use non dispersant mineral oil for about the first 50 hrs. changing at 10
and 25 hr.

intervals. I use 1-2 qts. the first 10 hrs. After the eng. is "broken in"
(100 hrs.) I will

use about 1 qt every 10-15 hrs. I don't think chrome cyls. will ever be as
oil consumption

free as steel cyls. but I sure do think they last a lot longer. The main
thing about new

chrome cyls. is NOT TO BABY THEM!!

With this method I have had engs. go to 1700 hrs. with still good chrome in
the barrels and

good compression.
Hope this is of some help to you

Alex Russell

For those interested I found out recently that Lycoming produce a video on
how to look

after new or overhauled engines in the run in period and to obtain the
maximum life out of

them. I have a copy. It has the same message for running in mentioned by

AzAlexR@aol.com
That is don't baby the engine for a start. I can provide details if anyone
is interested
