G'day Guys !
Just got back from a 2000 mile "quick holiday" in 541R .... went
GREAT !!!!!
Couple of really attention getting landings ..... Landed at Wilpena
Pound in Central / Southern Australia in a 20 gusting 30 knot dead
crosswind ... FULL right rudder & FULL left aileron - just to keep it
lined up on the runway .... the Rebel went GREAT ... (my underwear
didn't fare as well though
..... when we turned around we had to use
full rudder AND lots of dragging brake to taxi back down the strip !!!
The more we fly the Rebel , the happier I am we built one !
We attended the SAAA ( our version of the E. A. A.) fly in convention
at Temora over the weekend , and I think I've notched up a couple of
sales for Australian Rebels .....
back to the battery question :
We now have an IO-320, engine mount sticks our far enough to get the BIG
/ LONG Lycoming oil filter on the back of it, firewall NOT shortened,
700Ah Odyssey battery mounted ON the firewall (engine side), wooden
prop, lightweight B & C starter & lightweight alternator ("SD 28" -
driven off the vacuum pad at rear of engine), and a nice heavy Scott
3400 tailwheel ..... and 10kg of lead right down near the rudder post
to get the balance point we wanted
our Rebel is now registered at 925kg M. T. O. W. ... ( and is called a
Rebel PLUS) ..... and the only reason I would consider selling it ,
would be to build another Rebel with all the modifications I now I
realize I should have done , built into it from day one !
Wayne: you will probably be getting contacted by one of the guys I took
flying (Ian) .... he is absolutely wrapped in the Rebel and is planning
to come over to Canada to see you , Bob , Bart Lalonde and Murphy and
sort out all the bits he wants ...
Ian has owned many aircraft (and still does ) and is just completing his
RV 4, .... but now wants to build a Rebel (I think he's not hard up for
a dollar ) .... but he says he needs to sell his Baron and Piper Colt
1st - ( mainly I think, to get more room in his hangar ) - Life is
tough for some !

When I built Rebel 652, I also did not move the firewall back and used
a Lyc
O320. I placed my Odessy 35lb battery on the floor RH side between the
2nd
and 3rd bulkheads past the rear window. I added a .062 bottom plate
with
3/4x3/4 alum. angle to box in the battery and also to attach .040 x 2"
straps which bolted together over the center of the battery. My ELT
was
mounted behind the battery. This combination brought by C of G exactly
where
it should be.

Thanks Murray
I think I need additional instructions on the reinforcement as my
battery
HAS to be installed far in the back due to the CG position. As I
mentioned
I
have an O-320 and am not moving back the firewall...
Any other Rebel builder has some experience on this?!

Jose:
My battery is in front of "D" not "E" so the pulley is behind the
battery
and I didn't put in any other reinforcing other than to rivet the
.063 to
the existing floor with adhesive between the two.I have not changed
