Glue for placards

Post by Mike Kimball » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:31 am

Hello everyone,

I recently had a whole bunch of little tiny placards made to label my
circuit breakers and switches. The place that made them put a little piece
of double-sided tape on each one and said, "don't worry, they won't fall
off". Well, they might be right if it's going to stick on a wall in a room
or something, but on the panel of my vibrating airplane that's going to
see -50F to +90F? Anyone have opinions about what kind of glue would be
best to stick these guys on? Contact cement, epoxy, etc. Also, you might
need to know that the paint on my panel has a slight pebble finish. (Silly
me, asking if anyone on the list has opinions :-)))

Glue for placards

Mike,

I can give you an example from my U.S. Navy experience. I had some equipment with placards put on the fantail of my ship (very adverse environment) and in about two months the started coming off. We finally settled on Liquid Nails construction adhesive to fix the problem. One year later they were still holding fast.

I have also had great results with Gorilla Glue. Don't use too much of it since it expands as it dries and you will have to cut off the excess with a utility knife.

glue for placards

Mike,
I would suggest Pliobond if you are really concerned about the existing
sticky. It will be a trick keeping it neat though. As an additional
step I suggest you overspray a coat or two of matt clear Krylon after
the sticking / gluing excercise. Be sure to do a test spray on a sample
piece to be sure the Krylon doesn't lift your letters or panel finish.
Also suggest a small hemostat (called a mosquito in the trade) to handle
and position the letters in place of big fat fingers.
