Yes Clay, I still represent UHS. 10"& 12" work well with the nose bowl and
doors cowling and the 14" is just slightly bigger than you'd want on the
speed cowling. This is where VAN's 13" would be perfect.

Cheers,
Wayne

Dale, can you tell me which spinner you bought from ACS. There's so
many to choose from.
Wayne, I believe that you were selling a fiberglass spinner a while
back. Do you still sell them? Can you give me some info.
Thanks guys.

I used the UHS 12 incher with the speed cowl when I had the Warp prop. Very
easy to fit and install compared to my current one from MAM for the
Sensenich. It looks a little flimsy compared to the metal ones, but seemed
to work fine. I made sure the whole assembly, prop, spinner and bolts were
perfectly balanced. I don't think it would hold together long if it ever
cracked.

Hi Guys,
I've decided on buying a metal (probabaly pre-polished) spinner. ACS
has a number of metal spinners but it seems to me that the SN-5 at 12"
in diameter and 11 1/8" long is the right one to buy. There is a longer
BN-3 spinner that apparently requires a front bulkhead, but the prop
thickness selections they offer won't suit my prop. Any thoughts on
this? Has anyone tried polishing their own?

Thanks,
Clay

Depends which cowling you are going with. The "speed" cowling needs a 13"
spinner to look correct. A 12" works nice with the "piper" nose bowl cowl.

Clay,

A tale of my experience with ACS Products Co. (subsidiary of Aircraft Spruce):

I have a Sensenich wood prop to install on my Rebel. In June of '04 I placed
an order to Aircraft Spruce for a BN-3 Spinner Kit (12"D x 13 1/4"L) which
Charley Denney at Sensenich had recommended. The BN-3 has both a front and
rear bulkhead.

It takes about 8-10 weeks for ACS Products Co. to manufacture the kit. When I
finally received it, it was badly damaged. The box had been crushed at one
end. The box was just barely big enough for the major diameter of the spinner
so the packing peanuts were of no help. A call to Aircraft Spruce and they
arranged to have UPS pick it up and return it at no charge to me. All I had
to do was wait another 8-10 weeks for a new spinner to be built.

The new spinner arrived in good shape except the front bulkhead was of too
small a diameter, leaving nearly an inch of space between my prop face and
the front bulkhead. I placed a call to ACS Products directly and was told I
probably received the wrong size front bulkhead. They advised me to ship the
bulkhead back (my expense)and they would ship me the correct size.

Approximately 4-6 weeks later I received the new front bulkhead. It was
exactly the same size as the one I had returned!

At this point I was getting pretty pissed off at ACS Products. I placed a
call to Aircraft Spruce Customer Service, told them my problem, asked them to
refund or replace the BN-3 with a BN-2 (10 3/4"D x 10"L and only one rear
bulkhead!).

Aircraft Spruce was very cooperative, gave me a return authorization to
return the BN-3 spinner kit (my expense, again), subsequently credited my
money back to my account, at which time I (very reluctantly) placed an order
for the BN-2 spinner kit.

Another 8-10 weeks to wait and I just recently received the BN-2 spinner,
nearly 8 months after I placed the original order. Consequently I have
nothing good to say about ACS Products Co. However, I know of no one else
that makes an aluminum spinner for experimental aircraft, so if metal is what
you want, it seems we are stuck with ACS Products.

I might also mention that with my 4D cowl (MC-3B nosebowl) the BN-3 was much
too long IMO, and made the aircraft look like it had a 'Jimmy Durante' nose.

Just FYI. Hope it helps.

Why not just go with the 13 inch spinner from MAM? That's what I
used, and it took a bit of time and care to install, but it
worked out great for me. They can be polished too if you want.
There has been a lot of experience with these on the list if you
want to search the archives. You do have to drill the holes in
the bulkheads with these, and it helps if you know a machinist to
get it right. Also, the blade cut-outs take a bit of work. But if
you can build a plane, this is still a minor challenge.

Hi Roger,
I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience with ACS. So far, I haven't had
any problems like that with ACS but I have had my share of problems with
other vendors. Maybe I'll order my spinner and arrange to pick it up at Sun

Wayne, what would it cost me for one of your fiberglass spinners?

Clay, I will send you a picture of MAM's 13" on the "piper" nosebowl and UHS
fiberglass pricing direct. This is what is on FOKM that Garry bought from
me.

10" works on the piper nosebowl, but 12" would look better and pretty much
give a "clean" transition at the top to cowl deck.

Thanks Wayne for getting back to me so soon. I agree, the 12" does have a
kind of blunt look to it. Too bad. FOKM's spinner does look good (I didn't
realize that was a metal 13") So it's only available from MAM? I have seen
an old metal 12" by 11 1/2" long that looks good but the guy can't remember
where he bought it from.
This shouldn't be so difficult.

Thanks again for your help.

Clay

P.S I know that this is probably more of a nuisance than anything for you,
but do you still sell those pog nylon washers that fit between the control
surface hinge points?

to do was wait another 8-10 weeks for a new spinner to be built.

The new spinner arrived in good shape except the front bulkhead was of
too
small a diameter, leaving nearly an inch of space between my prop face
and
the front bulkhead. I placed a call to ACS Products directly and was
told
I
probably received the wrong size front bulkhead. They advised me to
ship
the
bulkhead back (my expense)and they would ship me the correct size.

Approximately 4-6 weeks later I received the new front bulkhead. It
was
exactly the same size as the one I had returned!

At this point I was getting pretty pissed off at ACS Products. I
placed
a
call to Aircraft Spruce Customer Service, told them my problem, asked
them
to
refund or replace the BN-3 with a BN-2 (10 3/4"D x 10"L and only one
rear
bulkhead!).

Aircraft Spruce was very cooperative, gave me a return authorization
to
return the BN-3 spinner kit (my expense, again), subsequently credited
my
money back to my account, at which time I (very reluctantly) placed an
order
for the BN-2 spinner kit.

Another 8-10 weeks to wait and I just recently received the BN-2
spinner,
nearly 8 months after I placed the original order. Consequently I have
nothing good to say about ACS Products Co. However, I know of no one
else
that makes an aluminum spinner for experimental aircraft, so if metal
is
what
you want, it seems we are stuck with ACS Products.

I might also mention that with my 4D cowl (MC-3B nosebowl) the BN-3
was
much
too long IMO, and made the aircraft look like it had a 'Jimmy Durante'
nose.
Just FYI. Hope it helps.

Spinners

As Keith said..Sensenich sells some nice ones direct to fit their
props..precut and ready to go!

As for the nylon thrust washers ..."pogs"..YES still have 1/2 a box full.
Send me $5 in an envelope with your address etc and I'll send you a dozen
the same way. You just need to cut a flat bottomed V out of them with side
cutters to clear the safety tie bolt.

Thanks Wayne for getting back to me so soon. I agree, the 12" does have a
kind of blunt look to it. Too bad. FOKM's spinner does look good (I
didn't
realize that was a metal 13") So it's only available from MAM? I have
seen
an old metal 12" by 11 1/2" long that looks good but the guy can't
remember
where he bought it from.
This shouldn't be so difficult.

Thanks again for your help.

Clay

P.S I know that this is probably more of a nuisance than anything for
you,
but do you still sell those pog nylon washers that fit between the control
surface hinge points?

Clay, I will send you a picture of MAM's 13" on the "piper" nosebowl and
UHS
fiberglass pricing direct. This is what is on FOKM that Garry bought
from
me.

10" works on the piper nosebowl, but 12" would look better and pretty
much
give a "clean" transition at the top to cowl deck.

Hi Roger,
I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience with ACS. So far, I
haven't
had
any problems like that with ACS but I have had my share of problems
with
other vendors. Maybe I'll order my spinner and arrange to pick it up
at
Sun
n Fun. I do have the piper nosebowl and like Wayne, I think that the
12"
diameter would look good. Does anyone have the 13" diameter on this
nosebowl? .
Wayne, what would it cost me for one of your fiberglass spinners?

Thanks
Clay

On the subject of spinners I know that Cessna declares the spinner to be
an airworthiness item on their line of singles. ie: no spinner, no fly.
Anyone know why?

Clay,
If you are using the "speed cowl" it seems to me that any spinner that
leaves a gap between the spinner edge to the cowl intake will require
the air passing down the side of the spinner to "bounce" off the flat
face of the cowl creating turbulence at the intakes and restricting the
flow of incoming air. On our speed cowl that requires a full 13"
diameter.

We elected to go with the Van's fiberglass spinner for ease of
installation. You can see exactly where to drill and the bulkheads are
fitted to the Sensenich prop thickness.

Not sure where you are, but I have had good luck getting spinners from UHS.
They are fibreglass and usually ships the next day balanced and all hardware
included.

I think Wayne sells them as well.
