Rebel elevator reinforcement
Posted: Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:27 am
I will be getting a new rudder skin because mine was badly scratched in
shipping. Can I use the .016 material for the quarter moon doublers on the
elevator corners, or should it be .025?
Thanks.
Jesse
Jesse, it was the end rib on the elevator that you should reinforce. On an
original build I suggest a small piece of angle with a couple rivets into
the end ribs flat face and on the other side of the angle a single RV1613
into the spar tube. This will keep the rib from rotating on the single rivet
that holds it to the spar if built according to the manual. A couple of ,025
doublers in a quarter moon shape picking up 3 rivets in each direction don't
hurt either! The balancer tip's up and down motions twist this end rib until
it forms cracks/buckles or breaks off the attachment tab to the spar. Easier
to tackle now...than after paint and a couple years down the road when you
have forgot where your tools and cleco's went!
Cheers,
Wayne
