Mike - How are you coming - It was about a year ago I stopped by to see your
pile of cool parts - how about an update for those of us who wish we were
where you are now (vicarious gratification).

Mikes Chevy 350

Post by Mike Kimball » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:27 am

I completed the engine some time ago. I am anxious to hear it running. I
had a bit of trouble finding the right headers for my installation. Anybody
need a nice set of tight tuck, ceramic coated headers for a Chevy 350 with
Chevy angle plug heads? Didn't work with my Airflow Research angle plug
heads. An adapter plate had to be fabricated from a 1-inch block of
aluminum to mate the torsion damper provided by the PSRU manufacturer
(CAM-500 from Firewall Forward in British Columbia) to the standard 12-3/4
inch Chevy flexplate. Fabrication of the engine mount is underway. I have
been communicating continuously with Lord about a shock mount (part number
J-7764-31) that I want to use at all four mounting points. I am narrowing
down the details of the plate that is captured by the two halves of the Lord
mount and some other dimensions I need so that I can fabricate hard points
for the engine. The hard points for the firewall are complete. They are
made up of steel blocks that mount at each of the four firewall mounting
points. "C" shaped pieces at the ends of the main tubular engine mount
structure will attach at each of the four blocks on the firewall. The
airframe is complete minus wiing tip installation (where are those Fife tips
for the Super Rebel?!?!). The instrument panel is complete but not yet
mounted so that I have easy access to the engine mount bolts so I can
properly torque them. Calculations for the proper torque are underway.
(This is critical.) 7/16 bolts will be used here versus the 3/8 bolts
normally used for a standard O-540 installation. I hope to mount the engine
in the next month or two. Then, I hope to indentify an off-the-shelf nose
bowl I can use to begin fabricating a four door cowl like Bob's.

I would like to put in a "plug" for the Mitchell miniature engine
instruments I am using. They are COOL! You rivet a prewired backplane to
the instrument panel, then all the gauges just plug in. If you have a gauge
failure, just unplug it and send it in for repair or replacement.
Installation consisted of cutting one square hole in the panel, back
drilling rivet holes in through the flanges on the back plane into the
instrument panel, and you're done. Pricey, but COOOL!

Mike
