New - and engines

Post by Bob Patterson » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:23 am

Hi Brian !

Welcome to the group ! The Moose is an excellent choice
if you want to haul a load off the water !!!

Don't know about the Predator, but Brian Robinson has well
over 800 hours of flying time on his LS-1 powered Seabee, and at
least 6 others in various stages - AND has made up mounts and redrives
specifically for the Moose !!! You can see the engine mounted on
a Moose on one page on his web site: www.v8seabee.com

I really like his approach to the project - he uses off-the-shelf
parts wherever possible, and de-rates for long life. He even has
air conditioning in his Seabee ! :-)

It would be interesting to see how his price compares to others.
I know he's not junk-yard cheap (he uses all NEW engines ...),
but it's still more power and better fuel economy than a Lycosaurus,
and his engineering has been well proven in flight. I've seen the
performance - it's awesome !!

That said - if you have a look around Murphy's site, you will
see photos of Al Paxia's Lycoming powered Moose - a real beauty !
He's getting VERY comparable performance to the M-14P, and
a clean looking airplane to boot. It <is> a modified engine - you'd
have to dig in the archives to see what Al had done to it - but
it is working very well !
......bobp

PS
This seems to have been sent to the Rebel Ramble list -
it would get more answers at rebel-builders@dcsol.com

Also, Brian, you seem to have some kind of anti-spam system
turned on, and it is replying to everybody on the list ...

Hi guys,

I'm new to this board. I'm in the early stages of thinking about a Moose
and I was really intrigued by the Predator Aviation LS1 engine. Does
anyone know if they have installed one in a Moose year? Looks like it
would be perfect! I sent them an email.

I also checked out the Bombardier V330 at Oshkosh this year. It looks
nice, but it won't be available for a while and it also looks like it will
cost $60K+ USD!

I live in the Boston area and fly floats in Northern Maine (on Moosehead
Lake). Are there any Moose drivers in the area?

Thanks,

Brian

New - and engines

Bob,

Thanks for the reply. I do have an anti-spam turned on. I'll thought I had
it set up to filter these - I'll double check.

I really like water-cooled. I'll check out the site. I'm really not
interested in a junk yard motor and the Predator seems be priced reasonably.

More to come!

Thanks again,

Brian

Mike Kimball

New - and engines

Post by Mike Kimball » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:23 am

I am using a Rodeck aluminum block Chevy 350 on my Super Rebel. My engine is complete and the engine mount is underway. My engine mount is being created using a fixed jig that can be used to produce more engine mounts. If you are interested in this route let me know and I'll tell you all about the obstacles you get to overcome, although I can steer you clear of some of them.

As an alternative I would recommend a company that builds complete conversions including the mounts. Check them out at www.epi-eng.com/. Although I am not using any of their products, they have been helpful with questions I have had. Their website is pretty impressive as well. If I had it to do over again I would be tempted to use them. But I did have a lot of fun and learned a lot building my own.

Mike
