Moose ideas and parts sourcing

Dear Fellow Moose Builders,

Your guidence and reccomendations are highly regarded and appreciated:

#1 Air Start System- I ordered my air start FWF kit from Kimball and I would
like the groups reccomendation on the best setup to have a primary and back up
air bottle system. Can anyone direct me to a source for a large (3000 psi +)
light weight air bottle? Any thoughts on the system?

#2 Gas door spring- Does anyone have a good source for a gas spring to open
and hold Moose doors? The only one i found was at www.mtnviewaviation.com and
they are expensive.

#3 Inertia reel harness- Has anyone installed and made the modification for
an overhead inertia real harness system. Check out www.basinc-acromod.com for
an example of an STC approved system for Cessna. I think It would be a
fantastic safety and convenience modification for the Moose.

See you at OSH!

Re- #2 The gas springs (shocks) are basically the same as what you
would find on the hatchback of your car, just in different lengths and
pressures. I did a project on a boat that needed the lifts and went to
my local parts store and my friend there was able to look up listings
for them in
1-closed length
2-open length
3-strength (or pressure).
I was able to find the right length within 1/2 inch and did have to try
a couple different pressures to get what I wanted. I was also able to
buy the brackets to mount them with as well. Didn't cost allot either.
You will have to probably go to a true "auto parts store" where the guys
(and gals) are a little more knowledgeable and know how to look these
things up. Usually they just look them up using car make model etc. But
if you go to the right place they should be able to help. Also a another
friend was able to pick up a set for something else from one of the
surplus stores we have locally. The selection wasn't great but he only
paid $2.50 a shock!

For number 2: Check out http://www.mcmaster.com/, catalog pages 1060-1063
for gas springs. They come in all sizes and pressures. I was able to find
a better than original for my a clam shell 340 door for about 1/4 of the
aviation model (not legal on Cessna but OK for homebuilt). Unit was
adjustable, sturdier, and works better than the original.

Hi A,

I'll respond to two of your questions. I've gotta ask why you want a large
3000+ psi cylinder. Industry standard is 3AA2400 for 300 cubic ft.
cylinders. If you're talking about this large a cylinder (10" diameter x
60" tall) you're wanting this as a ground based recharge cylinder. You
should be able to get one of these locally from any welding supply
distributor. Some won't sell their own cylinders (I won't, for instance...)
but can order one for you that'll be a generic cylinder without ownership
markings. Expect to pay about $240.00 for such. If you INSIST on pressure
in excess of 3000 psi, such are available. Price will come close to $500
for a 3600 psi cylinder. Expect to pay $1000 for a 6000 psi cylinder. If
you do get one of these high pressure cylinders, you're gonna pay dearly to
have it filled to the pressure rating. Bottom line; get a standard 3AA
2400 size 300 cyinder. Make sure you tell your supplier that it's for
industrial air (valve CGA590) and NOT nitrogen.

I've bought several lift struts at Auto Zone. Check the length and end
configuration that you need and look through their display. They've
probably got 40 different styles. Prices are good, too.

Getting the air bottle off the firewall sure makes it cleaner up there and
helps with wt & balance. We put ours (Kimball type bottle) aft of the
extended baggage compartment. Others have put smaller diameter bottles in
the floor under the front seats. We also moved all the solenoids to under
the seat to keep them out of the oil etc. We didn't put in a back up
bottle.

If you are talking Seaplane style doors with hinge at top. We got our gas
from Austin Hardware. http://www.austinhardware.com/default.asp?

The 90# seem to be working well. Undecided as to the best end fittings,
metal or nylon. My nylon ones seem to be good unless you take them on and
off a lot during testing. The little tabs inside break. I had to order all
new ends before I was done. I think someone told me the metal ends seemed
like you could tug them off the stud if someone accidentally pulled on them
too hard.

This is the one we used:

AVM 87-90 PE
Price: $13.96 EA

Weight: 0.8 lbs

(A) Extended Length 19.63"
(B) Compr. Length 12.63"
(C) Shaft Dia. 8mm
(D) Tube Dia. 19mm
(S) Stroke 7.00
Type of Connector PS130

Take care,

For a large airstart bottle, I have a few 3000 psi aluminum scuba bottles.
These are new and never been used. $125 each. I believe most of them are
either gray or flouresent yellow
