Moose exhaust assembly

I noticed today that my lower exhaust assembly came apart at a
hose-clamp joint. It will likely be no big deal to put it back
together, other than taking the cowl off. My question is whether one
should use some high-temp sealant where the two exhaust pipes join, or,
just put 'em back together and crank the hose-clamp down tighter...

Thanks,

Ted

Moose exhaust assembly

I have heard that these need to be checked now and then and can be the
source of "funny" sound as the exhaust rattles around. I haven't heard of
anyone putting any sealant in there but am not sure. Looks like they have
nut and a lock or jam nut on each one.

The engine guys (and gal) that used to lurk on here probably don't know
about the list address changing. If no one has already, I'm going to send
Jill & Carl, George and the Kimball's a quick note letting them know about
the change.

Can you reach it with just the cowl opened up or does it look like you'll
have to take the lower cowl off?

Scott

Moose exhaust assembly

I took the cowl off yesterday and found that the cylinder attach point
was cracked 7/8 through. I tried like heck to get the screw-on O-ring
(proper name?) off so I could take off the whole assembly to get it
fixed, but I couldn't break the seal. So, having run out of time, the
A&P in the same hangar offered to put some penetrating oil on it, let it
soak and try to get it off today for me.

I drilled two holes and put #10 SS screws in the other exhaust assembly;
one in the uppper portion of the hose-clamp and one in the lower where
the two halves mate...that way even if the hose-clamp loosens the
assembly cannot come apart. I'm going to do the same on the repaired
one later this week.
