Plastic Float Access Cover Fix

Don't know if any of you float fliers have been breaking these,
but there may be a fix available for about $10 CAD if we can get
enough volume. Someone local here has arranged to have some SS
retainers fabricated if we can get enough volume. I will try to
describe them, since no pictures are available.

They are short round tubes the same diameter as the raw hole in
the float top. The tops have about a 1 inch outside flange just
large enough to cover the screw holes. The bottoms have a small
inside flange that fits just under the round plastic pieces where
the plastic caps screw into. These SS retainers then fit into the
float top raw hole first, and then you place the plastic cap
assemblies on top and inside. The top flange gives support to the
plastic flanges which also break when you step on them, but most
importantly the small bottom inside flange supports the bottom of
the plastic that the caps screw into, to prevent that plastic
breaking when someone steps on the caps.

Clear as mud? If anyone is interested, please let me know, and
we'll see if we can get enough volume to get these made at a

The lower flange is actually the one that is needed the most, as
when the cap is stepped on, it gradually breaks away the plastic
female bezel ring from the top piece. I have had both areas
break, but when the cap starts caving in, you have to replace
them. I expect the weight to be very light.

The only other option to this problem (that I know of) is to make
separate aluminum covers which has been discussed here before and
I know Wayne uses. But if you want to retain the quick removable
cap covers, this might work.

problem that I was not planning to use the screw in
covers unless a
reinforcement of some kind for the female bezel was possible.

They'd have to be kept fairly light if made of SS
instead of aluminum of
course and at that low price it sounds like you are
talking about a
stamped out bezel ring that goes under the existing
female plastic bezel
ring. That sounds like an elegant solution. I would
have guessed that
the lower flange was not needed as long as the top
flange gives enough
rigidity. If the top flange doesn't flex when stepped
on I would guess
the plastic won't break, but it's awhile since I
actually looked at the
pieces.

weekends, but it has all been local so far this year, mostly out
to the lake. We've had great spring weather so far, and I just
hope it's this good in July when I will have more time off from
work to do some longer trips. How's your project coming? Is that
diesel still looking good? Phil here got his Elite flying.

Hi Walter !

This does sound like a great fix - would have to go on first,
though - and my floats are already finished.... :-(

There is another fix - not a pretty, but easy enough -
just cut a circle of clear Lexan about 1/2" larger diameter than the
removable cover and fasten it to the top of the cover (couple of bolts ?).
Because it hangs out over the support ring, it transfers load
from the center of the cover (= the threads inside the support ring)
to the broad top surface of the ring itself - the cover can't be pushed
in through the hole ! You do have to cut a couple of holes in the Lexan
to open up the finger holes to twist off the cover ...

I had considered a full strip of 1/8" Lexan the full width and
most of the length of the float top, with traction paint on it, to
cover all of the covers, but it might be a bit more awkward for
inspections (if you don't have pumpouts ...).

The lower flange is actually the one that is needed the most, as
when the cap is stepped on, it gradually breaks away the plastic
female bezel ring from the top piece. I have had both areas
break, but when the cap starts caving in, you have to replace
them. I expect the weight to be very light.

The only other option to this problem (that I know of) is to make
separate aluminum covers which has been discussed here before and
I know Wayne uses. But if you want to retain the quick removable
cap covers, this might work.

problem that I was not planning to use the screw in
covers unless a
reinforcement of some kind for the female bezel was possible.

They'd have to be kept fairly light if made of SS
instead of aluminum of
course and at that low price it sounds like you are
talking about a
stamped out bezel ring that goes under the existing
female plastic bezel
ring. That sounds like an elegant solution. I would
have guessed that
the lower flange was not needed as long as the top
flange gives enough
rigidity. If the top flange doesn't flex when stepped
on I would guess
the plastic won't break, but it's awhile since I
actually looked at the
pieces.

Hi Walter, I'm interested! Give me an idea on the price for the final decision, but it sounds good. I do like the easy inspection the plastic covers give, but hate the breakage.

If you remember this from last summer, Julius (that's his amphib
Rebel on the May Kitplanes cover) is now going to get another run
of these done now, and needs confirmed orders. I know a number of
you were interested back then, but some of you may have found
other alternatives. I have been using mine since last summer, and
they definitely did the trick for me. So those that still want
them, please let me know, either on or off the list, and I will
pass it on to Julius.

I have found that the Beckson DP50 should work. Per the specs they
should fit within the existing holes.

I have found a supplier here in Canada that is to supply them for around
$10 each. Beckson has assured me that they will support weight (people
stepping on them) and not break.

These might be lighter and have no corrosion issues (stainless ring) for
a new installation.
Which I guess begs the question whether anyone has tried them or at
least had a good look?
The ones from MAM are also probably satisfactory on a solid deck that
doesn't flex.
