Been discussed at length before Bob, but one thing that I don't think came
up at the time as a variable was weather you are running just the oil bypass
plunger or have a vernatherm in the screen/oil filter adapter.

O-320's running a bypass plunger...like most A2B's etc that have come from
Cubs....the oil cooler is on at all times and the bypass plunger is there
(in the accessory case on an angle below where the screen bulb bolts on) for
when the oil is too think to get through the cooler it pops open to bypass.
Other than that the cooler is functioning all the time and why you have to
block the cooler pretty much right off in the winter and sometimes even
through most of the summer.

When running a vernatherm (screen bulb has BIG nut in center and temp prob
to the side) the oil only goes to the cooler when this unit opens (just like
a car rad thermostat). I have found that the engines running a vernatherm
generally run hotter than those that don't. First reason is a restricted oil
flow to the cooler and secondly quite a few of these units stick and don't
open properly or at all. If you have a vernatherm then you will see higher
temps at even this time of year. My trip to Brampton the other day saw a
steady 210/215 at 2500 RPM. A little hotter if I lean aggressively. Don't
see much worse on 95* days, but it might hit 225* (that I don't get excited
about) if I am really pushing her. I like 210/215 though, it makes sure the
water boils and gets the heck out of my engine. 170/180 temps just form a
cloud inside the engine and redeposit the moisture!

Start there and tell me/us what you have!

hi wayne and others my engine has a vernatherm i don`t know if it is
opening all the way but will do what Phil suggests and see if the oil cooler
is hot

it is set up like many of them --on the firewall with a scat tube running
down off the back of the starboard side of the engine

can this thing the verathane be adjusted?

No, vernatherm is not adjustable.

Check as per Phil and see if your cooler is even doing anything. Then you
will know what route to take. If it's not working then you may need to just
replace your vernatherm. If you find that... I have a few here...that I can
check before selling. I believe that I have one brand new and about three
used ones. If you find that the cooler is hot, then you may want to just
remove your vernatherm and put in a plug. You will then have to find and
install a bypass valve though if you do so. Engines use one or the other,
but can't use both at the same time.

Hi Bob,

My vernatherm was 'overhauled', but didn't work, stayed closed. In a pot of
water it finally opened just at boiling.

I took it apart and cleaned out the guck which had settled INSIDE the bottom
of the unit, preventing it from opening. After this no problem with hi oil
temps. Now too low sometimes unless I really try to push it on a long climb
after a cruise.

I think that a vernatherm can be adjusted by adding or removing washers
under the spring. I've been told the maximum number of washers but I'll
have to ask my AME buddy again.

Sure you're not thinking of the oil pressure relief valve on the right side
of the case Drew?? It can be adjusted by adding washers...if you don't have
the older screw adjustable type. Don't see how you could adjust the
vernatherm..but of course could be wrong.
