Hi Bob,

I have a speed cowl 0320 with the MAM packaged fire wall forward oil cooler
mounted on the firewall as Wayne shows on the web site pics and a 3" scat tube
attached also supplied by MAM. It never runs over 200* F even in the hot
summer months in Spokane, WA. I completely blocked it off this winter just to keep
the oil hot enough to bake off the moisture.

It sounds like your not getting enough air through it.

Bruce

Okay Bruce...the question is do you have a vernatherm or just a large plug
in the hole on that B&C oil filter adapter??

Wayne,

Good memory, Wayne, that you would remember I had the B&C. I read your post
and it seemed confusing to me as I was pretty sure the B&C 90* oil filter came
with its own vernatherm, or at least a hole for it to stick the one off your
old filter in.

But I have a problem keeping my oil temps up in the winter! Maybe it stuck
in the open position.? Is the plumbing for the vernatherm internal with the
engine, meaning there is not external plumbing required, right?

Yes, the B&C (and lyco adapters) come with a hole for a vernatherm. If you
didn't have one in your original screen/filter adapter installation then you
probably just put a plug in the large hole...as we did with Howard's for his
remote Airwolf filter.

The Vernatherm just plugs the round hole in accessory case that's centered
between the 4 mounting bolts for the screen housing/filter adapter at
approximately 180*F. The unit expands about 3/8" to do this and once it
closes the hole the only route the oil can take is through the cooler. If
you have a problem it is usually that they usually stick open if anything
and then you have high temps because no oil is being forced through the
cooler. I guess there is a chance that your's has stuck in the extended
position and hence your cooler is on all the time, but I think I remember
telling someone to just put a plug in the B&C adapter, but can't remember if
it was you.

Next oil change take a peak by pulling that big headed plug or vernatherm
out of the adapter to see which you have. If just a plug, cover up some of
your cooler or make a sliding control plate or better yet a butterfly inside
the scat tube to the cooler. If a vernatherm, stick it in a pot of water and
you should see it expand about 3/8" as it passes 180*F or so.

Bob, I've got my oil cooler on the right rear baffle, and have
not had oil cooling problems. I also do not have a vernatherm and
have to tape off part of my inlet in cooler weather. Instead,
I've had trouble keeping my CHT's down on long climbs on a hot
day. How are your CHT's?

Hi Bob,

I had a similar problem, stuck thermowhatever,
I chased air flow for a while until I checked by feeling (carefully) the oil
cooler when I landed. Oil cooler was cool, indicating lots af air but not
enough oil flow. If it's hot then the air flow is low, not the air.

Glad to hear you still flying those floats.
Phil.
