Moose CG

I'll clarify CG on my Moose this next weekend, but I'm under the
impression (from the builder) that the empty weight CG is at the wing
leading edge. I believe the 250lbs of ballast he has been flying with
in the cargo space is to make triming it out easier. Again, I'll verify
and report back.

HI Ted,

Congratulations on your purchase. Don't feel bad about not building your
Moose. For my partner and myself building is simply a necessity to end
up with the final product. If I had a magic wand I would have waved it
over the pile of parts the first day and puff, instant Moose! Purchase,
puff, instant Moose. Good for you.

Randy and I are apron six weeks or so away from first flight.
If folks are interested (let me know), I'll report my detailed flight
experiences as I get checked out by the owner in a couple of weeks.
Landings should be interesting!
We certainly would be interested in detailed flight experiences. Thanks
I'm told the CG is at the wing leading edge and
that one is wise to put some ballast in the baggage area if flying
alone to keep things well within limits.
Ted, was this to state that the empty weight CG was at the leading edge?
I have seen two sets of numbers from Murphy for flying CG range. 9" to
20.4" and 9.5" to 21.38" aft of the leading wing's edge.

Was the 250 lbs. in the baggage area for demonstrating load carrying
ability? Do you know how much and where ballast was needed for solo
flight?

Once again, congratulations and welcome.

Hi Ted !

I wouldn't worry too much about the extra ballast -
<I> wouldn't want to fly a Moose solo without AT LEAST 120-150 lb.
at the rear of the baggage area. Even with the O-540 engine,
the Moose/S-R feels much nicer with that extra weight if you're
flying alone & light . The design is much like the
Rebel - everything you put in there moves the CofG back, so,
to get the fullest use of the max gross, the empty CofG must
be very far forward - and it usually IS ! ;-)

Also, the datum point for calculating CofG DOES NOT have to be
the leading edge of the wing (it could be something 10 feet in front
of the aircraft !!). The percentage of chord is important, though...
You might want to re-weigh it & re-calc the CofG for your own peace
of mind. If you use the factory-suggested datum (front of gear
legs ??) then the factory-suggested measurements for CofG position
will be meaningful. If it has the original light tailwheel, that
is something you'll want to change ASAP - a few pounds back there
will really help ! Also, paint will help move the CofG back
significantly, as most of the aircraft is aft !

Moose CG

My Moose CG comes in at 11.61" with a gross of 2,164 lb.

I've seen an allowable range that one person used of 10.5" - 21.9". Another
builder used an allowable range of 10.8" - 20.4".

Does anyone know what the factory recommends? I don't have the manual in
front of me now.

Thanks!

Ted
