1800 amphib/0320 Lycoming

I think you thought it was the same as mine, but mine is 54.
Anyway, my top speed is 125 IAS at 1500 ASL turning about 2720
RPM with the 150 hp on 1800 amphibs. Climb is 1200 fpm solo with
1/2 fuel, and about 800 fully loaded. This is at sea level.
Cruise is around 105 mph at 2350 again at 1500 ASL. 100 if loaded
up. IAS goes down at same RPM at higher altitudes.
Just got back from a flight today, and checked my elevators, and
no sign of cracking, but not able to check the ribs directly as I
have my tips riveted on. Will have to take them off, maybe next
winter, and do a full check of my elevator and stabs.
I never did test the Borer. The guy offered it to me, and was
even bugging me to try it this winter. However, with the
fibreglass cowl, I need a propeller extension, and was not keen
to try that with an 81 or 82 inch (forgot the exact diameter)
prop. Would rather have someone else try it first.
Like you said, these planes get off pretty fast as is, and I
wouldn't want to compromise my cruise too much. But it would be
interesting to see how it does with the Borer. Right now, some of
ultralight buddies get into some real high small lakes, that I
don't dare try with my current configuration.

Hi Walter,
Did I say I had a 74x54 Sensenich prop? I actually
have a 74x56 pitch and at
3500 ASL i could get 2650 RPM firewalled and 113 MPH
IAS. Seems like a good
match with the 150 HP 0320.
That last 5 or 10 MPH and 200 RPM probable burns 2
more gallons an hour and
just doesn't seem worth it to me. If I was in that big
of a hurry I would have
bought an RV kit instead.
At gross weight, which is where you always seem to be
with the amphip, I
still get off the water quick compared to my certified
flying brethren.
You must get even better climb with the 54 pitch prop.
I remember you wanting
more and talking a Borer prop. Is that still something
you are considering?
What was your 74x54 prop and 0320 top end RPM and IAS, again?
Bruce
