first flight/51%/prebuilt kits

For those rebels on floats, I have included what one prop manufacturer
recommmends for the 160 HP Rebel with floats at the end......... I'd be interested
in any acual performance figures with ad without floats and any effects of
wingtips such as a Hoerner or droop wingtips in a float equiped Rebel.
Note also that the 51% rule, I believe, is for the portion not built
professionally, i.e., amateur built and not pay for hire So if the previous builder
was also a amateur or partner and the price was primarily for the parts (and
not labor) purchase of a preassembled aircraft may still be applicable for the
51% rule. For inspection of a partially built kit, consider past experience of
the builder (how many planes has he built and successfully got through
airworthiness) and take an EAA tech inspector (hopefully an AI or A&P in addition)
with you.
It is still buyer beware.... and some purchasing a prebuilt kit end up
rebuilding components. I was a first time builder buyer and bought a Rebel
previously assembled by two EAA tech counselors, one of which had previously built ten
other airplanes..... I still found some things I am reworking (minor in the
larger scheme of things) and a few things that I am changing (such as corrosion
protection and fuel capacity).
You will probably be asked to sign a waiver of liability, releasing the
previous builder from any subsequent liability. The EAA has some good info on the
experimental ownership

the Murphy Rebel is a 74DM. For the 160 HP application we use a 58" pitch.
Typically when propping aircraft with floats we will go down in pitch about 4".
This would result in a pitch of 54" for your Rebel with floats. You could
purchase the 58" and then when you are ready for the floats just have the prop
repitched to a 54". As far as performance goes you could check with Murphy
because typically the aircraft manufacturer will do the performance tests. We do not
typically have performance data available because each one of our props has
many different applications. If you have any other questions please let me know.

Both the 74DM and 70CM are type certified propellers. The propeller we use onFrom prop manufacturer
