Rebel-Factory Wingtip Install

Post by rognal » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:09 am

I have the stock Rebel wingtips which I am in the process of installing with
rivets, per the builder's manual. I am aware of some builder's using
nutplates, but I am going with the manual on this and using rivets.

For the wingtip install, the manual calls out for drilling a hole (between
the existing flush rivets) after every second rivet in the outboard rib
flange.

But, the existing flush rivets in the outboard leading edge rib are currently
spaced (factory drilled)from 5/8ths to 3/4 inch. To drill an additional rivet
between these, violates established rivet spacing practices of AC 43.13-1B.

I'd be interested to know what others have done. The only other alternative I
see is to drill out some of the existing flush rivets to use for mounting the
wingtip, but that would require flattening the dimpled hole and I don't know
if that is an accepted practice or not.

I would appreciate any comments.

Rebel-Factory Wingtip Install

Roger, I did mine in between the existing rivets, but don't
recall the rivet spacing that close on the outboard end.

Rebel-Factory Wingtip Install

Post by klehman » Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:09 am

Hi Roger

I have photos of two flying Rebels that only have 9 screws on the bottom
of the tip going into the wing rib so I think it's probably OK to skip a
couple of the rivets if that helps. OTOH I also found a photo of the
factory Elite that looks like they did use the 20+ rivets on the bottom
of that small tip.

I'm using #8 clipnuts which require an even larger hole than for rivets.
I think the manual is saying that it is OK to violate the 4d
rule-of-thumb spacing in this particular case. With proper engineering
it is OK to violate all those rules-of-thumb in specific circumstances.
I don't think the outboard rib is very highly stressed.
