EGTand CHT Thermalcouplers

Hi Guys,
I'm about to drill the 3/16" holes into my stainless steel exhaust for
the Westach probes (probe with clamp). The directions in the box
indicate that the probes should be mounted 4 - 8" below the flange.
I've noticed several pictures with probes (don't know what kind they
are) that appear to be mounted only 1.5 to 2" below the flange, which
would certainly be easier to do (avoiding bends). Anyone advice on
this? Does anyone have these Westach probes mounted closer to the
cylinder than recommended.

Also, should the CHT coupler be mounted under the bottom or top plugs?

Thanks for your help.

Clay

Clay, My original instructions said 4 to 6" from exhaust valve which
resulted in 1 1/2-2" below flange (on the straight section) and mine have
been working fine for two + years now. The CHT units I placed under the
bottom spark plugs and do read on the warm side - 450/475 on climb out but
has not been a problem. I bought this type before I realized my O320 had the
tapped holes for the screw in type which I will use come replacement time.

Hi Clay, I too am running the Westach thermal stuff. My distance is in the recomended range on the egt probes. As for the Cht be very aware that the reading you get will be different than the Lycoming numbers simply because they are taken from under the spark plug and closer to the exhaust on the bottom or further away on the top. This is in relation to the probe style that Lycoming uses for ther numbers. I found the difference from the top to the bottom was 80deg f. It read 40 high on the bottom and 40 low on the top in relation to the given Lycoming numbers. I also verified that with a probestyle system I was loaned. I run mine on the top and I lowered the red line 40 degrees. Curt N97MR
