SR and Moose flaps

Posted: Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:05 am
by Tom and Joy Packard
Some time ago, someone (I think Al Paxia) was going to try using
Teleflex cable on a floor mounted flap handle for a SR or Moose. I
would also like to eliminate the pulleys and slot with fairing on top
and think the Teleflex cable would work. Has anyone tried this and do
you have any photos or sketches of the installation? How has it
performed and would you change anything? Also, what size Teleflex was
used and how and where did you attach it to the flap control tube?
Thanks to anyone with the info.

Hi Tom,
Yes, I used a Teleflex cable and it works good. The flaps deploy when the
cable is pulled. The raising of the flaps is pushing on the cable, so I did
add one spring to help the cable. I will post a picture out of the
bellcrank mechanism where it attaches to the flaptube and Teleflex. I will
measure the Teleflex tomorrow and let you know the length, but a little
extra length is not a problem.

SR and Moose flaps

Hi Steve,
I just posted a couple of old pictures. The Teleflex is a marine engine
control cable and follows the path from the flap handle to the flap tube in
a sweeping 180 degree turn. I used the bellcrank to change direction so the
pull stroke deployed the flaps and push on the cable did the retraction.
System has been flawless for over 400 hours and over 300 landings.

Al, yours has to be one of the higher time SR/Moose out there. Any issue
with the flap torque tube rivets? Have you heard anything about it? I
haven't finalized that part yet so I may just redesign to eliminate the
riveted tube if it is a problem.

Thanks for the pictures and the quick reply to my post! ! ! !
I'll be doing this mod to our moose. Looks like a nice install and will save
cutting the roof and the cable in the centre of the rear fus. Will make it a
lot easyer to get to the back to do any work.

By the way, it was nice to talk to you at OSH at the Fri. dinner. Should have
said this before.

SR and Moose flaps

Hi Dale,
I do access the rear fuselage, under the floor to the tailcone. The Teleflex
cable just stays inside the fuselage and lays against the side of the
tailcone and back to the flap tube up in the corner wrap.

handle to the top if you don't access the rear of the fuselage it sounds
to

Thanks for the pictures and the quick reply to my post! ! ! !
I'll be doing this mod to our moose. Looks like a nice install and will
save
cutting the roof and the cable in the centre of the rear fus. Will make
it a
lot easyer to get to the back to do any work.

By the way, it was nice to talk to you at OSH at the Fri. dinner. Should
have
said this before.

SR and Moose flaps

Posted: Sat Feb 18, 2012 9:40 am
by Al Paxhia
Hi Scott,
I have not heard anything about flap torque rivets being a problem. The last
time I looked in that area was last Feb. so I will check this week. I plan
to take the floats off next week. The field is getting a little mushy for
amphibs. Takeoff and landings are fine but taxiing in soft ground tends to
plow two rows in the taxiway from the nose wheels.

Al, yours has to be one of the higher time SR/Moose out there. Any issue
with the flap torque tube rivets? Have you heard anything about it? I
haven't finalized that part yet so I may just redesign to eliminate the
riveted tube if it is a problem.
