I use a Nippon Denso (spelling?) alternator that came from a Chevy Sprint.
My engine is a
Lycoming O320. Fits and works fine for my application. Forgot what
the amperage was, but it was not high. It is very small and light.

I have also a Nippon Denso (40 amp) with an internal regulator, but did not

It has a thick "B" connector which goes obviousl to the battery.
But what happens with the "IG" and "L" terminals?

Hello stefan better late than never.
The nippon denso alternater in question requires only a low current =
voltage sense lead and a battery charging lead.
The view from the rear of the circular connector has three terminals =
from left to right ,
a vertical , a horizontal, and a vertical,
the sense lead is the first vertical on the left.
The other two are unused.
hope this helps.

Alternator
Hi guys and gals,
I need help on how to wire an auto Japanese alternator, that has a built in regulator, to my 0320. There is one wire coming out of the alternator that would normally connect to the field wire coming from the regulator. Does this field wire from the alternator now go directly to the master switch?

Hi Bruce
On a nipondenso alternator run a heavy wire #10or12 from the threaded post
connector to your main bus. Run a second wire from the spade connector to
your alternator switch. if theres 2 spade connectors jumper between them
and connect to the switch.

Drew,
Thanks for the tip. I have an alternator that is stamped Denso. I will wire like you say.
Looking at the fan blades it looks like the blades are turning the wrong way. Like the alternator was designed to be on the other side of the engine. Have ever noticed this, and does it make any difference?

I can't remember what I did with the fan and I don't know if it makes any
difference or not. Tony Bingellis says you should have a cooling blast tube
pointing at the alternator but I never got around to installing one and
I've had no troubles with mine yet. If you do instal a cooling tube you
should probably point it at the intake end.

Alternator
Further to Drew's comments, there are numerous successful reports of
turning automobile alternators in the reverse direction for many
hundreds of hours. Generally I think it is not a problem that the fan is
less efficient in reverse. On a tractor Lycoming the alternator is
usually out in front in cool air and lightly loaded compared to many
cars. Cars generally run the alt in hot air (after the rad). The alts
generally don't mind turning somewhat faster than in the car but there
are limits and they do tend to heat up more when run a very high speeds.
If you have a second spade terminal on the alt it is usually intended to
go through a small light bulb to +12 volt. While pretty much useless for
low voltage indications caused by something like one bad diode, I find
that bulb does usually illuminate if the alternator output goes to zero
so it may be of some use to you if you don't have separate low voltage
annunciation of some type. Often the spades are labelled "Ig" for the 12
volt sense line and "L" for the light bulb. Some alts will not start
unless you supply voltage to the L terminal.
One caution might be that often I find used alternators (ND included) to
have badly worn commutator rings. Usually I recommend opening the
alternator and checking the brushes and commutator or using a rebuilt
unit. I think Niagra Airparts was advertising new ND alts complete with
Lycoming mounting brackets for about $200.

Hi all,
My 0360 engine core has a Prestolite alternator with a black cover on the back for maybe hooking a hose to. The nipple end is broke off and I need to repair. Is this cover necessary and if so, where does it connect to?
